US security chief strives to expel all illegal immigrants

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said his department aims without exception to expel all those who enter the United States illegally.

"Our goal at DHS (Homeland Security) is to completely eliminate the 'catch and release' enforcement problem, and return every single illegal entrant, no exceptions.

"It should be possible to achieve significant and measurable progress to this end in less than a year," Chertoff told a Senate hearing.

Thousands of "Mexicans who are caught entering the United States illegally are returned immediately to Mexico. But other parts of the system have nearly collapsed under the weight of numbers. The problem is especially severe for non-Mexicans apprehended at the southwest border," Chertoff explained.

"Today, a non-Mexican illegal immigrant caught trying to enter the United States across the southwest border has an 80 percent chance of being released immediately because we lack the holding facilities," he added.

"Through a comprehensive approach, we are moving to end this 'catch and release' style of border enforcement by reengineering our detention and removal process."

Chertoff's remarks in favor of returning "every illegal entrant, no exceptions" appeared to conflict directly with the US policy toward illegal Cuban migrants.

Though Cubans picked up at sea are returned to their country, those who reach US soil by air, sea or ground are allowed to stay and work -- a fact Cuba says encourages dangerous illegal emigration attempts.

Right now I'd be happy with keeping out any new illegals.

I think that's what D.C. is counting on; people being so fed up that they'll settle for any little crumb that gets tossed their way.

Many a good plan was not implemented because people waited to perfect it before implementing.

It doesn't have to be perfect, but they need more manpower and detention centers before they can even begin to stop more people at the border.

I am for deporting all illegals and confiscating their property in the process. That can be sold at auction to pay for the border patrol.

I'm all for that, but you'd sure have the ACLU (and others) screaming like a banshee.

I live in California too. Our city is a hel*lhole now because of illegal immigration. The infrastructure here is totally failing. Not enough cops, firefighters, hospitals etc.

You are preaching to the choir here.

Amen to that. A bunch of illegals moved into the house across the street from where I grew up (and where my parents still live), and there is a lot of suspicious activity going on in front of that house. There are at least 4 cars there at all times, people just loitering in front, and while I'm not a cop, we know we've seen a few drug deals go down.

Best part? There's an elementary school on the block next to my parents house.

Personally, I can't wait till these people are kicked the h*ll out of the country. But hey, I'm just a white gringo racist. Go figure.

Which is exactly how our areas are quickly going from neighborhoods to barrio.

you cannot even drive thru the town I grew up in after dark now. The gangs have taken over. Hubby used to work there as a firefighter. People asked him where he worked his answer was...in ______ where murder is still a misdemeanor.
They commit their crimes then head back to Mexico.

Oh I know, its sickening.

There's a local radio guy here named Jeff Katz (on 910am KNEW) who was telling a story the other day where he was behind some illegals with kids (naturally - gotta love an anchor baby or 12 for the public tax dollars to take care of), and he was just a tad disturbed about what the t-shirts the kids were wearing read.

The front was in spanish (again, naturally) but on the back it said "Junior Gang Banger" and the other kid's shirt read "Future Gang Banger."

And we need more of these people WHY, exactly?

Geez - what a concept! Require the able-bodied to work? Nah - it would never fly.

Now there's a good option. We still have chain gangs here in VA doing menial stuff like picking up litter, etc. and from what I read in the paper, there are waiting lists in the jails (these are non-violent criminals) to pull this duty. Gets them outside in the sunshine away from the other 500 angry men in the big house.

Here's where Mr. Chertoff can start:

1. Chertoff starts up paddy wagon with some buds.

2. Chertoff et. al. drives to any CA. Home Depot.

3. Chertoff et. al. arrests + checks docs of all Mexican illegals milling around there all day, every day without any attempt to hide what they're doing.

I don't think that keeping out all new illegals is a small crumb. It is a strong first step. As for the ACLU; we should deport them too. They confiscate property from drug dealers and this crime costs our country more.

I don't trust the man in the least.

Hornswaggling the citizenry is really easy these days.

Actually, the article is badly reported. If you read his atual testimony it becomes clear that his remarks were very narrow in scope. He was talking very specifically about non-Mexican illegals apprehended at the Southern border. When they catch Mexican illegals, they just take them right back over the border and so it's cheap to do (i.e. they don't need a place to keep them in detention nor guards to guard them.) With the non-Mexican illegals, they just turn them loose after charging them with being illegal and hope they'll show up for the hearing in a few months. What he was talking about is that they want to move away from this catch and release program for non-Mexicans and actually make sure they get returned to their rightful country, which would require increased funds, of course. The headling and article make it sound as if the Administration was actually getting on the ball and getting serious about the illegals problem. Chertoff and the President were quick to clarify the remarks. Chertoff's testimony can be found at: http://judiciary.senate.gov/testimony.cfm?id=1634&wit_id=66

Search the text for Mexican and you'll quickly get to the relevant statements.

No need for more detention centers if they are STOPPED at the BORDER. If they do not make it into the country, no need to detain them.
