HALIFAX - Katrina is saving some of its wrath for Canada later this week, Canadian weather forecasters said Sunday.
The monster hurricane will have significantly weakened when it reaches Canada by Wednesday or Thursday, but it could still cause flooding and travel disruptions, said Guy Roussel, a forecaster with the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax. "By the time it reaches Ohio, it (wind speed) will likely be something like 60 to 80 kilometres per hour," Roussel said.
A weakened Katrina can be expected to dump between 50 to 100 millimetres of rain, but some people may see much more.
"If it (Katrina) decides to stall somewhere, you could be looking at higher amounts," said Roussel.
The category 5 hurricane was bearing down on New Orleans early Monday, bringing winds of nearly 260 kilometres an hour and the threat of an 8.5-metre storm surge.

Considering New Orleans is about 5 feet below sea level, a 25 foot storm surge would put it 30 feet below the storm surge.
The figure I've seen reported all day is 12 feet below sea level, not five. Levy walls are 18 feet tall at the tallest according to one report. Makes you wonder what the shortest points are in the levy. Storm surge is being touted as 30 feet. Parts of New Orleans may be as much as 40 feet under water tomorrow morning. Some reports are saying it could take six to twelve weeks to get the water out.
Ouch.
It's all George's fault.
Sounds reasonable.
Heh heh heh...
LOL!!!!!!!!
You must have missed this one:
On Oct. 15, 1954, a weakened Hurricane Hazel hit Toronto with winds of 120 km-h and torrential rainstorms (18 cm of rain fell in just 24 hours). Houses in low-lying areas of the city were flooded or washed away completely. Before the storm finally petered out over James Bay, it left 81 people dead, 4,000 homeless and tens of millions of dollars in property damage.
wtf are these stats in english, anyone?
Katrina is saving its wrath for Canada?
What the heck will be left of it when it reaches them? "Wrath"?
They are a truly odd lot up there. No wonder they can't handle any threat greater then their national symbol, the maple leaf.
I heard Canadian Customs is going to slap a 23% tax on Katrina later this week for attempting to enter the country without filling out the required paperwork and forms.
Canadian justice officials are also mulling over filing "hate crime" indictments of Katrina because there are anonymous charges she has "incited many people to pray to God" which may cause a "backlash" against homosexuals.
For your information, Halifax was pounded by a hurricane last year. Huge trees all over the city that had stood for over a century were downed. Docks in the harbour which have weathered countless storms over the years were destroyed. Hardly New Orleans type damage, but fairly serious nonetheless.
37 to 48 MPH winds and 2 to 4" of rain. Brace yourselves Canada.
