Governor Considers Declaring Border Emergency

Arizona, New Mexico Issue Declaration

POSTED: 1:52 pm PDT August 17,

UPDATED: 2:23 pm PDT August 17,

SAN DIEGO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Wednesday he would consider joining his counterparts in Arizona and New Mexico in declaring a state of emergency to strengthen law enforcement along the border with Mexico.

"We're talking about that right now," Schwarzenegger told a local radio station. "If we see a need for that, we definitely will do the same thing."

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson issued an emergency declaration on Friday to free up $1.75 million in funding to fight crime and illegal immigration along that state's border with Mexico.

"Recent developments have convinced me this action is necessary -- including violence directed at law enforcement, damage to property and livestock, increased evidence of drug smuggling and an increase in the number of undocumented immigrants," Richardson said.

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano issued a similar declaration on Monday, allowing $1.5 million to be earmarked to fight criminal activity and illegal immigration along the Arizona border.

"The federal government has failed to secure our border, and the health and safety of all Arizonans is threatened daily by violent gangs, coyotes and other dangerous criminals," Napolitano said.

"Anyone who lives at the border can attest to the fact that what they face is devastating," she added. "I intend to take every action feasible to stem the tide of criminal behavior on the Arizona side of the border."

Both Democratic governors joined Schwarzenegger, a Republican, at a recent conference on border issues in New Mexico, which included representatives from Mexican states.

"We all have talked about the importance of really securing the borders," Schwarzenegger told the radio station.

"It is not just the flow of illegal immigrants that are coming over here, but it is also the drug trafficking that is going on, the violence that is going on on the borders and the human trafficking," he said.

Schwarzenegger said he would only consider declaring a state of emergency along California's border with Mexico "if there's a need."

"Right now, we are having things somewhat under control, so there was no reason for it yet," he said. "If there is a reason for it, we definitely would do that."

Schwarzenegger was recently criticized by Latino groups for his praise of the so-called "minutemen" civilian patrols that monitored San Diego County's border with Mexico this summer.

Looks like the minuteman project and the public outcry has forced their hand.

In other news:

Mexican Earthquake

A big earthquake with the strength of 8.1 on the Richter scale has hit Mexico. Two million Mexicans have died and over a million are injured.

The country is totally ruined and the government doesn't know where to start with asking for help to rebuild.

The rest of the world is in shock.

Canada is sending troopers to help the Mexican army control the riots.

Saudi Arabia is sending oil.

Other Latin American countries are sending supplies.

The European community (except France) is sending food and money.

The United States, not to be outdone, is sending two million replacement Mexicans.

God Bless America!

So, the emergency already exists. The question is whether or not it's declared as such.

If he thinks things are “under control” now, and there is “no reason for” it now, exactly how bad will things have to get?

Exactly. The town of Jacumba is now basically controlled by traffickers, and the San Diego sheriffs department under the corrupt Bill Kollender has basically acquiesced to the smugglers. That's supposed to be an ordinary, "under control" state of affairs?

Looks like the wily Dems have outfoxed the bumbling Repugnants once again. Either Ahnuld and Rick "Tejas es Mexico" Perry get on the bandwagon or they end up being turned into laughingstock.

Boy oh boy. These liberal governors sure are making news lately. First Richardson takes action to secure the NM border, then Napolitano in Arizona and now Arnold in Kalifornia. I don't trust any liberal. Even if he/she is a Republican. But I must say, they're sure upstaging PresBush.

Thanks for the ping.

The Governator should send some of his Hollywood buddies with their special effects. That would scare the tacos out of the illegal crossers.

Sounds good. It's only too bad that Arnold is so afraid of taking a stand, of possibly having SOME people disagree with him, that he didn't do this BEFORE two other governors did so.

"Maybe de Terminator can make all the illegals wear GPS bracelets .. so we can find them when he gets around to wanting to do something about them."

And there you have it... AGAIN!!! He's over there bellowing about legislation for sex offenders, but only toying with the idea of a hollow "emergency declaration" which kinda reminds me of Gray Davis' "emergency declarations!!!" (so he can copy the other two "D" Governors)

Enforcement talks and Boolchit walks, Arnold!!! (I'm getting so sick of this phoney baloney B.S'er already!!!)

"What are we cheering for?"

I'm not cheering; I have no faith is Ahhhnold's willingness to make the hard decisions.

Just calling your attention to the posturing.

LOL. Sorry--I knew you weren't, but I read the first half of the thread and was scratching my head at all of the comments implying that something was done or a committment was made. As you note: posturing.

Thanks for the ping!

Here is an update via the AP.

Arnold asked to declare an emergency
By Tom Chorneau, Associated Press

SACRAMENTO - The state Assembly leader called Thursday on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency along California's border with Mexico, saying more federal patrols are needed.

New Mexico drew national attention last week when its governor made a similar declaration, citing the lawlessness, drug smuggling and human trafficking along the border. The governor of Arizona did the same this week.

Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuez, D-Los Angeles, said California needs to pressure the federal government to stop drug running and illegal immigration.

"The timing is good," he said. "The governors of Arizona and New Mexico have done this, and there's an opportunity for three states to have a joint effort in lobbying the federal government."

Nothing like being third in line for the free votes. This is a smart move by Ahhhnold, but he is in some serious hot water. The unions in Cali (if you miss the comercials in TX, AZ and NM they are ripping him to shreds every night) are spending at an unprecendented pace in CA to prevent union, school, and spending reforms. His only solution is a move right. His support is eroding because conservatives feel he lacks conviction.

A lot of people have been hoping for Ahhhnold to find his balls and stick it to the illegals. I really think this is about Mrs. Schwarzenegger recognizing what is going on here. If she wants to become First Lady one day, or even a Congresswoman, she needs to straighten her hubby out. Ahhhnold is unwilling to go hard right, which is what he really is, because of her and her relations. It is time for her to tell him to just cut loose and go with what he believes. Let the chips fall where they may.

Finally, this issue is a COMPLETE political band-aid. This money is meaningless unless the political and beauracratic situations at the CA, AZ and NM borders change. They need more troops (whether state, federal or volunteer) and they need the gloves off. Frankly, I have always felt that the Government of Mexico is in a defacto state of war with the US, since they support the illegal immigration and transfer of US dollars back to Mexico. I mean, how is that not pillaging?
