Update: Jailer dead after shooting by prisoner's wife; manhunt underway
Wayne Morgan, the corrections officer shot outside the Roane County Courthouse Tuesday morning, has died of his injuries at UT Medical Center.
According to a Tennesseee Corrections official speaking with the Knoxville News Sentinel, Jennifer Hyatte, wife of 34-year-old inmate George Hyatte shot Morgan three times with a shotgun Tuesday morning. The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the courthouse.
Morgan was escorting Hyatte and another prisoner into the courthouse for a scheduled hearing.
George Hyatte then escaped with his wife, and the two are still at large, with law enforcement officers from several counties involved in a search. Roane County High School has been placed on lockdown status.
A dark blue Ford Explorer believed to have been driven by the shooter has been located behind a Subway Sandwich Shop near the Roane County Courthouse.
The suspects are now believed to be traveling in a late model Chevy Venture van. They should be considered armed and dangerous.
The officer has been transported to a hospital via Lifestar Medical Transport, where he is in critical condition.

Here we go again. Another Barney fife 'ala GA?
They may have had an accomplice .. a woman supposedly got out of a van and shot the jailer. If true, they got help from the outside.
Metal detectors didn't detect anything. High school in the county is under lockdown . . these suspects are armed and VERY dangerous. May be more accomplices other than alleged woman accomplice.
Let me guess... they're protesting the abuse of "customers" of the Tennessee penal system.
Starwise,
I'm close by in Jacksboro TN, right up I-75. I just called my Mother in Clinton and told her to lock her doors, she's elderly and alone.
My guess is they'll head up I-75 or down I-40. Kingston is right on I-40
Jailbreak?
Oh man. I LIVE in Kingston. I am at work right now in Oak Ridge. A Co-worker here has a daughter that is locked in at the high school. They were registering for classes today. Her sister has a police scanner and is giving regular reports to us. Apparently they ditched the first getaway vehicle at the Subway in Kingston and are now in a gold van.
While it appears that this did not actually happen within the courthouse, most courthouse security sucks. Federal courthouses are pretty good. State court houses in Washington are awful.
I put my money on meth or oxycontin(sp?).
Fox News just said they left the van and are now on foot. Nothing else.
I know we have a freeper in Oak Ridge but I can't remember his name.
Prayers for the INNOCENT victims.
"Apparently they ditched the first getaway vehicle at the Subway in Kingston"
Apparently, Jared the Subway Guy was unharmed. Thank God.
Officer shot at Roane Co. court house during jail break
August 9, 2005KINGSTON (WATE) -- A correctional officer in Roane County was shot Tuesday morning while escorting a prisoner at the county court house in Kingston.
Authorities are searching for the escaped prisoner and his wife.
The shooting happened as the jailer was leading the prisoner out of the courthouse from a hearing. A woman jumped out of a nearby SUV, firing at the officer.
The prisoner escaped in the SUV with the woman.
The van was later found empty nearby in Kingston. Authorities believe the suspects fled on foot.
The officer, who's name has not been released, is in critical condition. He was flown by Lifestar to UT Medical Center in Knoxville.
LadyJMayo,
I have an uncle who lives in Kingston and works in Oak Ridge. He lives right on the lake in downtown Kingston. They are now looking for a gold van.
Did they say where the van was abandoned? Crap...they could be hiding out in my house out in the country.
"a woman supposedly got out of a van and shot the jailer."
damn, she's coldblooded.
That's one loyal wife.
"Fox News just said they left the van and are now on foot. Nothing else."
They won't get out of this alive I'm thinking.
Heads up!
