The London Bombings: How the U.S. and the U.K. Should Respond
by Nile Gardiner, Ph.D., and James Phillips
July 21, 2005 (link to PDF)
Thursday, July 7, 2005, will go down as one of the darkest days in British history since the Second World War. At least 55 people were killed in a series of bomb blasts in the heart of London, and several hundred were injured.
The July 7 attacks were followed by a series of near simultaneous minor bomb blasts on public transportation in the British capital, involving detonators, on July 21. Although there were no fatalities, the attacks caused widespread disruption to the London subway network....
What the U.K. and the U.S. Should Do
In response to the London bombings, the British government should:
-Strengthen British anti-terrorism laws.... Greater powers should be given to British authorities to detain suspected terrorists, and the U.K. should immediately withdraw from provisions in the European Convention on Human Rights that might act as a barrier to effective anti-terrorism measures. The British government should strongly consider implementing counterterrorist laws pioneered by the United States in the PATRIOT Act.
-Follow a policy of zero tolerance for Islamic extremism. Britain... must no longer tolerate the Islamic militancy in its midst, which seeks to destroy British society and impose a Muslim state....
-Reverse Britains defense cuts....
The governments of the United States and the United Kingdom should jointly:
-Coordinate London and Washingtons Anti-Terrorist Lists. There is a striking discrepancy between the U.S. and U.K. lists of international terrorist organizations. (See Appendix 1.)
Stay the course in Iraq....
Press Pakistan to root out Islamic extremist groups....
Take the war to the terrorists....

I am in favor of sending strongly worded letters telling the Muslims how much they have hurt our feelings and how we really didn't mean to hurt their feelings so much that they want to blow us up.
Well, from what I can tell, Heritage advocates reducing our dependence on Saudi oil, and keeping pressure on the Saudis.
That's all well and good, but how many have to die in order for us to do something serious. Rhetorical question, not aimed at you.
"I am in favor of sending strongly worded letters telling the Muslims how much they have hurt our feelings and how we really didn't mean to hurt their feelings so much that they want to blow us up."
Whaaa??? Are you insane?
Halmark Friends cards are more appropriate in times of tension!
Well, I am believer in the principle of proportion. We need to stop the political correctness, and to a better job of monitoring the Muslims in our midst, "extremist" or not. We also need to stop an out-of-control legal system from being lenient on these thugs. We need to stop anyone who tries to tie our hands from defunding the Saudis, and/or stopping the money flow to and from that country. However, I sincerely disagree with anyone who calls for indiscriminately killing Muslims (I'm not aiming this comment at you). We need to act like surgeons, not like a caveman with a club.
Would it be indiscriminate to kill Imams who preach death to the US?
As a general principle, no.
DO they suggest closing Any mosque that refuses to be monitored? To those who believe such would prove unconstitutional in America -- I ve read too many credible
reports ofAmerican churches being subjected to searches because some disaffected leftist reported they had preached against homosexuals--or against Abortion.Or lest we forget the harrassment of Jerry Falwell by those Infidels who suggested he violated the Law by suggestions that George W.Bush ought be reelected.IF we already monitor the Christians -- Why do we support Islam- and not treat the mosque like we do Christian churches?
You will dedicate the US to fighting an asymetric war for the next 100+ years. I am not sure that is the proper course.
Regardless if you maintain the status quo, or "MOAB/nuke the bastards," a war for that long is inevitable. The Muslims are literally picking up where they left off, after their "high water mark" before the battles for Vienna and Lepanto.
" While they're at it, they could standardize their spelling."
'Standardize'?. You mean 'Standardise'.
The things you do with my language. ;)
LOL
START KICKING IN MUSLIM DOORS!!! All the bombers/terrorists are Muslims. It has nothing to do with "race," that a left wing canard. The only question is one of distinguishing among Muslims. There are the bad Muslims, the Muslims who do not help against the bad Muslims and the good Muslims. The key is identifying the bad Muslims. No race, just bad guys.
MOAB...how about a mushroom cloud?!
The Heritage proposal is ok as far as it goes. However, Europe laid the basis for its current wave of Muslim terror by looking the other way (and worse) while Muslim terrorists were perfecting techniques, strategies and tactics on the Jews of Israel. There will be no end to Muslim terrorism until there is unqualified recognition by governments of the West that terrorism is terrorism. There can be no special exemption for killing Jews, a few tens at a time, every now and again -- in Israel, or anywhere else. Any response to Muslim terrorism that does not accept this simple fact is an inadequate respone and will ultimately fail.
I don't beleive in "MOAB/nuke the bastards," I believe in engaging in asymetrical warfare in return. It is the only way to teach the Muslims to behave. I believe an Imam who preaches death to the West is a combatant and needs to be treated as such. The result of treating terrorism as a law enforcement matter, results in unnecessary attacks on the west.
We need to understand why they hate us, and then everything will be copacetic!
Since they (Hopefully) don't have nukes and don't have MOABs (we don't either BTW) that would be asymmetrical warfare.
