A small fire and anti-gay graffiti were found Saturday at a church belonging to the United Church of Christ, a denomination that endorsed same-sex marriage last week. The exterior of St. John's Reformed United Church of Christ also included a message that United Church of Christ members were sinners.
A member of the congregation discovered the graffiti when he stopped by to mow the grass. He found a small fire within the sanctuary. The fire was put out in a few minutes, Lt. Tim McCray said.
A Virginia State Police fire investigator was on the scene Saturday afternoon, but declined to comment.
The fire came a day after two black churches were heavily damaged by seven arson fires in Sparta, Tenn. Authorities said there was no evidence that it was a hate crime, but they were not ruling anything out.
Someone also tried to set fire to a mosque early Saturday in Bloomington, Ind., and the FBI was investigating it as a hate crime.
The United Church of Christ's rule-making body endorsed a resolution July 4 endorsing same-sex marriage. UCC churches are autonomous, meaning the General Synod does not create policy for its more than 5,700 congregations.

"A small fire and anti-gay graffiti were found Saturday...Why use such obtuse language?
Why not just say sad graffiti?

The writer is trying to emphasize the strong bond that exists between black Ameicans and gays (sarcasm).

Vandalism is very wrong; lightning would be appropriate.

You might mean it as sarcasm, but I bet you're pretty close to the truth.

Cool! I got a mention on DU, They don't like my handle, even though I got it from their daddy Al Gore. It's apparent that none of them are reading the thread, only one person on this thread has even come close to defending arson. Truth just gets in the way for them.

The UCC is getting its just desserts, for being religiously incorrect.
However, if vandalism occurred against a conservative church, it would be an example of left-wing religious bigotry. I think this is something Freepers intuitively understand.
Could someone please explain to me why liberals can not understand this distinction?

Sorry, I'm not buying that. Arson and vandalism are wrong, no matter who the victim might be. You also just made a liar out of me on my own blog. I pointed out that only one person was claiming it was deserved. Now I have to count two instead.

God left this "church" years ago, this place is no longer his.Exactly. It can burn now, or burn eternally with all the abominations still in it later .
They got off easy this time. Wait until they stand for their judgment (That hells fire is really going to hurt!).

After saying that, my first reaction is to wonder if they defaced their own church to get some publicityLOL. At first reading, I thought you typed "defecating" their own church. LOL. Being a homo church, it seems as though they'd like that!

later pingout and I wonder if it was self-perpetrated hate crime as so many are?I think so.
They deliberately hit on straight guys to get beat up, so they can add it to their "hate crime" statistics.
It's like the anti-arms movement. They crave gun deaths. They lust for them. It' helps their agenda.

same-sex marriageThere's an oxymoron. Next, another left wing group will demand their "civil right" to marry canines or amphibians! Environmentalists will be rubbing themselves on trees in public, and referring to it as "love." Sheesh! Where will the madness end!

That's generally my first thought. Most people are to apathetic for such crimes.

This is totally stupid and counter productive. I hope the perpetrators are found and brought to accountability.
I dislike what's happening in these apostate churches as much as anyone but this is only going to create sympathy for them. They don't deserve it.
To: digitalbrownshirt
I agree, defacing someone else's property because you don't agree with them are the actions of a weak minded person. UCC is anti Christian, but we're supposed to love our enemies, even when we hate their actions. Destroying their property isn't showing love Well said.
