Schwarzenegger urges governments to act on climate change (writes editorial for UK paper)
San Luis Obispo Tribune ^ | Jul. 02, 2005 | Associated Press

LONDON - In a British newspaper editorial, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger urged governments - including that of President George W. Bush - to face up the reality of global warming.

"The debate is over," he wrote in Britain's Independent on Sunday newspaper.

"We know the science. We see the threat posed by changes in our climate. And we know the time for action is now."

Climate change is one of the major issues to be discussed at this week's summit of the G8 wealthy nations at Gleneagles in Scotland.

But reports suggest that Bush is blocking a deal on action to tackle it and that Washington is unwilling even to sign up to a document which states that global warming is occurring or that human activity is responsible for it.

Schwarzenegger did not mention Bush by name, but called on "governments everywhere" to join action to combat climate change.

He contradicted Bush's claims that taking action will damage the U.S. economy.

"Global warming threatens California's water supply, public health, agriculture, coastlines and forests - our entire economy and way of life," Schwarzenegger wrote.

"We have no choice but to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

Schwarzenegger has vowed to make California a leader in the battle against global warming, calling on the state to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases while increasing use of renewable energy.

He believes that developing cutting-edge environmental technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells will conserve energy, curb pollution, protect natural resources - and be good for business.

Last month, Schwarzenegger signed an executive order that calls for reducing the state's emissions of greenhouse gases to 2000 levels by 2010, 1990 levels by 2020, and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

"These steps are great for the environment but great for our economy, too," Schwarzenegger wrote in the Independent on Sunday.

"Many people have falsely assumed that you have to choose between protecting the environment and protecting the economy.

"Nothing could be further from the truth. In California, we will do both."

Global warming enabled civilization to evolve.

Warmer rather than colder.

Imagine the doom and gloom if the earth was cooling.

Global cooling freaks would be burning anything they could to warm the atmosphere.

Arnold is a nutcase.......California fruitcake.......blends right in to the environment.

Put some diapers on a volcano dude!!

He get's his education from his Kennedy brethren, specifically RFK, jr. who wrote his environmental platform.

Arnie, the Kennedy Conservative.

well, if arnie believes that, he should get rid of his half-dozen hummers.

i'm not convinced that "global warming" is of human origin.

humans are not as important in the big picture as some think we are.

Schwarzenegger urges governments to act on climate change

Hmmm, there's something misleading about that headline...

Schwarzenegger urges governments to pay off his political backers

There, that's more like it.

Building his presidential, global image, perhaps?

I can't find it online, so I assume he also limited its availablity by only allowing it in the print edition. He is a master at media manipulation, you have to give him that.

I'm getting even more motivated to see this guy removed as Governor. He's going completely out of his danged gourd!!!

Even Gray Davis wasn't even quite this stupid, although he was about as stupid as they come!

It seems we've jumped out of the frying pan... right into the fire!!! Of course that's not what us mainstream conservatives had in mind when we started the Great Historic California Recall Election, now was it? I didn't think so!!!

"The debate is over," he wrote in Britain's Independent on Sunday newspaper

Damn it, I hate when people say things like this. Is the debate over? Well, that depends on what is meant by "the debate". There are several debatable issues, among them:

Of these, it can truly only be said "the debate is over" about the first one. Yes, the climate is changing, just as the climate has always changed. The climate today is not the same as the climate 100 years ago... and the climate 100 years ago was not the same as the climate 200 years ago, and neither was the same as the climate 300 years ago, and none of them bear much resemblance to the climate 20,000 years ago, which in turn was very different from the climate 1,000,000 years ago.

It is far from proven that the changing climate is due to human activity. It is far from proven that even if it is, the climate is changing in a harmful way. It can even be argued that the current trend in climate change may prove beneficial to humankind. None of these issues is beyond debate, and anyone who asserts "the debate is over" is merely trying to shut down debate and declare himself the winner.

This is as absurd on it's face as the 1990 law that all state garbage dumps were commanded to reduce by 50% in 1995 and to close by 2000. Now all the danged garbage is being trucked and trained to NV!!!

I think he's trying to make a hit in "Old Europe" and will try to become "head of state" in the EU comyooonutty, someway!!! (only because our USCON forbids it here)

Good grief! Someone really needs to educate him on this.

He's getting plenty of (mis)education from the people who wrote his environmental plan: Bonnie Reiss, RFK Jr., Terry Tamminen, Robert Grady (a trustee of Environmental Defense), Buzz Thompson Dean at Stanford Law School and a bigwig at Earthjustus), and Dan Emmett (a big developer and real estate speculator).

Here is what you don't understand:

When a person has sold out their principles for an imagined reality that they KNOW isn't supported by facts, they have no intention of being so reminded. They so fear the accountability that comes with the failure to sell their ideas that they cave to the false whispers of half a loaf.

When people, especially moderates, are confronted with a hard choice, that choice becomes paradoxically easier. Such is a choice between a conservative and a liberal. Between a conservative and a moderate (as Davis was believed to be), a conservative loses. Between a conservative and a leftist, as Bustamante is and Davis is now exposed to be, a conservative wins, especially amid the wreckage of leftist governance.

That is why it was so evil for the Republican Party to run a supposedly moderate candidate against Bustamante and against their own principled candidate. That candidate is a statist, an anathema to everything for which the party supposedly stands but upon which the leadership depends for the cash flow with which it funds its continuing feckless hegemony.

Our protagonist, being an actor, needed only packaging, and a selective message to each divided constituency. Who cares if they are mutually exclusive messages? Just win baby.

Win what? With that philosophy in charge, the corporate and legal feeding frenzy that is destroying this state will continue.

Too bad you didn't get this before the recall election. It's going to get worse and it didn't have to happen.

NO, it didn't need to happen. We could have continued with Gray Davis or gotten Bustamante. What a pity, what wonderful place California would be now if either of them would be governor today. (/sarcasm)

California Gov. Gray Davis Signs Landmark CO2 Pollution Measure; New Law Uses Power of American Know-How to Tackle Global Warming

July 22, 2002

http://www.nrdc.org/media/pressreleases/020722.asp

California Governor Gray Davis today signs a pioneering measure to protect California's health and environment by reducing global warming pollution from all new cars and trucks sold in the state, America's largest automobile market. The law demonstrates that Americans can and will meet the global warming challenge, and reaffirms California's worldwide leadership in pollution safeguards and clean vehicle technology.

The law -- known as AB 1493 -- is the first of its kind anywhere in world, and marks a dramatic change in the national global warming debate, according to NRDC (the Natural Resources Defense Council). It reaffirms California's successful 40-year leadership in pollution safeguards and clean vehicle technologies.

"We have the know-how to solve this problem safely and affordably. The law is proof that America doesn't have to take global warming lying down," said Ann Notthoff, NRDC's California Advocacy Director. "This is a bold stroke for the people of California, and an enormous credit to Governor Davis and the legislators who fought to get it to his desk."

Introduced by Assemblymember Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills), AB 1493 requires automakers for the first time to limit heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), which form a thickening blanket in the atmosphere. It also will reduce other pollutants, and save consumers money at the gas pump.

NO, it didn't need to happen. We could have continued with Gray Davis or gotten Bustamante.

That again? Gad, you're just as bad as Arnold, but it is fun to discredit you again, so thanks for the opportunity to post the facts, again.

Despite having the second lowest Republican registration of any senate Republican seat up for election this year, McClintock's campaign ran more than 19 points ahead of party registration - the largest margin of any senate Republican:

Candidate Party Votes Percent
* Tom McClintock Republican 226,225 61.0%
Paul Joseph Graber Democratic 144,800 39.0%

Here is the last poll before the recall by USA Today/CNN/GALLUP.

"If the choice were between Cruz Bustamante, the Democrat and Tom McClintock, the Republican, who would you be more likely to vote for: Cruz Bustamante or Tom McClintock?"

September 25-27
Registered Voters

McClintock 49%
Bustamante 42%

Probable Voters

McClintock 56%
Bustamante 37%

There is no way Bustamante would have won in any race where voters had selected their preferences, as opposed to "he can win." When you grow up enough to face your accounability for abetting this mess, maybe you'll understand Arnold's actions a little better. It's not like you weren't warned.
