This was quite a number of years before the movie, "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind," but the mother ship that I and my 5 children witnessed was identical to the one in that "fictional" movie.
This was sometime in 1972 or 1973, when I lived in the country, 8 miles from Wellesley, MA. It was in February. It was a clear, crisply cold night about 8 PM. We all had "safari" binoculars and we stood on my 2nd floor bedroom balcony for at least 20 minutes, watching the "coming and going" of the baby craft.
It looked a lot like a busy bee hive.
Then, very suddenly (as other UFO eye witnesses have also reported), the little craft were almost like they'd been sucked into the opening by a giant vacuum cleaner. The mother ship then whizzed off with such speed that within 5 seconds, it was just a spot in the sky. Five more seconds and it had disappeared entirely.
While we were watching it, it was probably some 1,000 ft. above a tree line - but I'm not very good at estimating distances.

Char,
I have never seen a UFO.I have heard friends talk about seeing them. It must have been very exciting being able to see such an amazing thing like you did.I believe you!
I see that every morning. It's called a "school bus".
