it won't be long before the Mideastern countries of Iran and Saudi Arabia do the same. Frightful! Well, China is worrisome and Iran is a bother, but I must say the thought of a "frightful" Saudi Arabian Navy makes me laugh.
If there is a man less suited to military prowess than the Arab, and particularly less so than the pampered and lazy Saudi, I can't imagine who it would be. Maybe an African pygmy.
If Saddam had cared to continue south from Kuwait in 1990, he'd have met more resistance from a troop of Boy Scouts than from the Saudi defense forces. Only the threat of American force held him back.

They fought both this battle and the previous attempt by the persian king with such vigor that the persians were routed... It's the Western versus Eastern way of war. The Persians were psychologically unprepared for Greek Hoplites who charged into Persian ranks as a group, fought together and died to the last man, if need be. For the average Persian serf conscripted into fighting for a distant king, the motivation behind such a fighting force was completely alien.

"Some people think the scholars are looters, too."
The early scholars were looters by many standards...
but if the scholars had not "looted" the Parthenon the friezes would be turning to powder in Athens's pollution rather then being preserved in the British Museum.

I once thought they'd never have pilots trained to fly F-16s either as "flying carpets" more to their liking...but, guess what, they do. They also have replaced their camel cavalry corps with modern main battle tanks.

The Parthenon friezes are highly controversial. They could be sent back to Athens to rot without impairing scholarship to any measurable degree.

The big prize - Salamis - has been left for now. I left my Salamis at home today. Tomorrow they will go on a roll with swiss cheese.

If it came to it, the whole lot would be swept from the face of the Earth about 40 minutes after Centcom gave the order.

The top row of oars rested on an outrigger that stuck out from the hull by about 60 cm (24 inches). The rowers were packed very tightly, the lower ones with their noses almost pressed into the bottoms of the men above and in front of them: an uncomfortable position commented on by Aristophanes.
An Athenian trireme was about 35 m long, with a beam of around 5 m. It had a complement of 170 oarsmen, plus a captain, 20 crew, and 10 marines. On each side of the vessel there were 31 thranites (the top row, from thranos, the outrigger) with oars about 4 m long, 27 zygites (the middle row, who sat on the zygos, the crossbeam) with oars about 3 m long and 27 thalamites (the lowest row, who were in the thalamos, the hold) with oars about 2 m long. The captain of a trireme was called a trierarch.
Guessing that it didn't smell to nice aboard ship
