May 31, 2005 -- Two former senior members of an influential pro-Israel lobbying group in the United States are expected to be charged with spying, according to reports.

Israel Radio reported yesterday that the U.S. Department of Justice is planning to file indictments against Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman, formerly of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, under the Espionage Act.

AIPAC last month fired Rosen, who was the group's foreign-policy director, and Weissman, formerly its senior Middle East analyst, after they allegedly received classified information from Pentagon analyst Larry Franklin....."

I read somewhere Mossad has an estimated 20,000 "civilian volunteers" in this country. Only a small percentage of them do anything related to information gathering. Most want no part of "espionage", and merely provide support in relatively benign ways.

If an active agent needs a cover job,or quick cash, or a place to stay,or a temporary hideout, the network of volunteers will generally provide it.If a stakeout is involved, there are sometimes a few volunteers available for the task.

I don't consider their activity particularly "sinister",any more than the similar activities of other friendly countries.

This case went "over the line"-to the detriment of BOTH countries.(For example: Al-Jazeerah LOVES the Larry Franklin case !)

Re your # 5....What you say is reasonable.

However, the bottom line for me is simply this: True friends don't "screw" their friends.....whether passing on top secrets entrusted to them under oath to another country...or the like.

That's what I meant by "over the line".

It's one thing to supply someone with a home-cooked meal;quite another to hand him classified documents.

Who is Steve Rosen? Is he affliated with the Rosen who
works for Hillary?

My understanding of this is that the secrets passed had to do with plans by jihadis to attack American soldiers in Iraq, with the help of Iran-supported elements. Certainly Israel would, if anything, have an interest in seeing that these attacks would not take place. And would you consider it a good thing if Israel used this intel in some manner to de-nuke Iran, for instance?

Thank you for the clarification.

Is it possible that people like Steve Rosen who work for social/civic organizations don't have a clear notion of the importance of secret government classifications of info?

It is doubtful in this case.

That is not a good thing.

We may be tempted but we should not be excused from violating the laws of our land. Is this a case where Rosen considers that the ends justified his means?

Listen to the sounds Of silence !

It won't be silent at AIPAC's annual meeting where W and Condi, et al will show up and give their groveling speaches per usual; notwithstanding the fact that two senior members of the organization have been indicted for espionage against this country.
