Joe Steffen--the former Ehrlich aide accused of spreading rumors about the personal life of Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley--broke his silence Tuesday.

Steffen, who has remained silent since his firing, released a statement to the 11 News I-Team Tuesday directed at the mayor's accusation repeated last week that Steffen took part in a dirty tricks team intent on spreading dirt about the mayor's personal life.
In the statement, [WBAL reporter] Miller said Steffen directly responded to what the mayor said last week when O'Malley accused the governor of continuing to conduct a smear campaign. The mayor referred specifically to what Steffen wrote on the Free Republic's Web site.

Miller said the mayor has used that comment -- and others by Steffen on the Free Republic Web site -- to claim he and his family have been targeted by an orchestrated dirty tricks team.
In his statement Tuesday, Steffen denies any such effort.
Joe Steffen releases a two-page, hand-written statement in effort to set straight accusations made against him of political dirty tricks.
Steffen wrote:
"There is no orchestrated effort that I know of from any so-called 'dirty tricks team' to perpetrate rumors concerning Mayor O'Malley's personal life."
Miller said he also dismissed any suggestion that he and others worked to spread rumors about the mayor.
Steffen wrote:
"When I wrote, 'A lot of the reason everyone knows about the rumors is because of what has gone on beneath the surface,' I simply meant that a lot of people know because they have heard the gossip over the years, gossip that is beneath the surface of the ... media."
Steffen now says he should have included the word "obviously" when he wrote on Free Republic that a few people have tried to keep the O'Malley story going.

Thanks for the ping.
Because he did his damage and got away with it. There is no point in going on.
Thanks for the ping.
There seems to be a lot of effort at keeping this story alive, although little effort to get to the bottom of it. Wish they had copied the entire 2 pages, rather than just one sentence.
Maybe he/she got run over by a car?
The one person who benefits from this mess is the Democrat who is running against O'Malley because the scandal hurts both O'Malley and Ehrlich.
Again, thanks for keeping me informed with the pings. Looking forward to the eventual release of the identity of MD4BUSH -- it is just a matter of time until Jim gives it to the proper authorities. Hopefully, it will be a well-timed revelation for an election.
I was not online at all yesterday (felled by the flu) and so missed it - you wouldn't happen to remember the title (or part of) of the thread you made your comments on, would you?

This thread was on the sidebar a couple of days ago.

All I did was make mention of the new info at that time.
OK - thanks - I remember that thread - because I got the link for Chip Franklin's show on it from one of your posts :)
