A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....05-24-05....Still Fontastic!

A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

We're gonna do somethin' Different today! :)

A couple of weeks ago I was having some major problems with my computer, and the tech that I use determined the best way to 'fix' it was to wipe everything from the hard drive and start over. He backed up my files and reinstalled them, but some things couldn't be salvaged - among them, many of the neat fonts I had downloaded to make fancy headings.

It wasn't until I looked at our regular threads - the topper we use on all of our threads and the TGIF post in particular - that I realized some of the fonts I used on them were not standard Windows fonts. Because they were already on my computer and I hadn't put them there, I just assumed they were part of the Windows default fonts. They must have been installed on my pc with a word processing program which I also lost in the reformatting, and therefore those fonts were not showing up anymore for me.
The default font face at FR is "Times New Roman" (the one you're seeing in red now.)
The yellow text above was typed with the "Calisto MT" font (which is a Windows Default font), and the font I am using now is called "Comic Sans MS". If you can't see the difference in this white type and the red, then the Comic font is not installed on your pc.

Ho-Hum! Yawwwwnnn!
Stop reading if you know all this already (she said in "Lucida Sans Italic"). If not, and you'd like to jazz up your posts with different types of font faces, then this thread's for you. It's easy, and it's fun. :)

I've now switched to another Windows Default Font called "Arial". I use it a lot for the text in my opening posts, because it's very plain and easy to read and everybody has it installed on their computers. It's a larger *type* than "Times New Roman", so I dropped the size down to "2" instead of the default size of "3".

When you open our threads each day, if the heading in the topper looks like the first example instead of the second one, then you don't have the font "FifthAve" installed on your computer.

If "Quill" is not in your font folder on your computer, when you open the TGIF thread, you'll see the first example instead of the second one. (The second one's much prettier, isn't it?)

I've also used Invitation, Vivaldi, Kidprint, Tabitha, and Chaucer often in my posts, to name just a few more that are not Windows Default Fonts. My profile page doesn't look right without "Tabitha" and "Kidprint" fonts. You can find most of those in the link I've provided in the "Three Easy Steps" below. "Kidprint" is not in the link with all the other favorites, but you can download it (and I hope you do) HERE.

If you're still reading - THANK YOU! LOL - and you do want to dress up your posts, or simply see our threads as they're meant to be seen, it only takes three easy steps to do so. Are you ready? Let's go!

1. Get Font 2. Install Font 3. Post Font

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.  Get Font.....
You could search Google Web for Free Fonts, or you could search Google Web for a specific font, or you can click on the link below for the easiest and one of the best collections of free fonts available on the net. (I've searched through several sites for my collection of pretty and/or cute or unusual fonts, but Mama_Bear sent me this particular website last week, and it is really great!)
6500 Free Fonts to Download
It couldn't be easier. If you want the fonts that I mentioned above, just go to the letter of the alphabet and look for them; or when you see any that you like, just click on the link to download it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2.  Install Font.....
When you click on that link under the font you want to install, select "Save" to your computer rather than "Open", and another window will open asking you where you want to save it. Choose C:/ and then Windows and navigate down the list of folders in Windows until you find the Fonts folder. Click on "Fonts" and you are downloading each font directly into C:/Windows/Fonts. That's it! *That* installs the new font on your pc - both Windows 98 AND Windows XP! The new font is *THERE* and ready to use.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3.  Post Font.....
You know how to make a post in color, and you know how to make a post in a bigger or smaller type - it's just as easy to make a post using a font other than the default, as long as it's installed on your pc. You type all the font commands inside one bracket, like this:
To turn OFF the font, type  only one time, and it turns off the face, the color, and the size all at once. (You still have to turn on and turn off the bold or Italics commands separately.)
Whew! Got it? Now I need coffee! Lots of coffee! Please, please, please, somebody, tell me you're going to install a new font or two and post it here so I didn't wear my fingers to the bone posting all this stuff for nothin'! :) The main thing you need to remember is that though you may see your fancy new font, unless it's on someone else's computer as well, they may not see why you're smiling so big about that pretty post you just made. Darn it!
Now Have Fun!
(This is "Quill" - if you download and install it, you will see it.)
I took this photo near Sonora, Texas, on I-10, where the interstate cut through this mountain. The flag, flying so high above us, was just overwhelmingly beautiful!
If you ever reformat the hard drive and start over again, you might consider doing what I do: buy a new hard drive and install on that, keeping the old one around to transfer the stuff from. I used to invariably forget something (like fonts) when I did it using the backup/restore method. Drives are pretty cheap these days, so it isn't too expensive.
A FONT thread?????????
I must have died & gone to heaven!
My computer has always been loaded with fonts. I would buy the CDs & each program (photoshop, Hallmark, etc) I had seemed to have a ton. I can recall years ago when computers were "weaker" and "smaller" my brother & other computer geeks would give me a VERY hard time about how this was bad for the computer. Now I guess it is a non-issue. But they still give me a hard time. Why would any want anything besides Roman New Times & maybe Arial??? Looking forward to checking this out throughout the day
Hope you had a good weekend & are a little rested up. Been insane here (understatement) and Mom has been unbelievably difficult. When it rains it pours? oh yes it is also raining, my van broke down, My washing machine flooded all over, a kitchen pipe burst, my printer died, I burned up two good pans (had them on stove and forgot while I was working MUCHO hours on power point). The pans were very good, expensive ones. Now they are in garbage outside. Beyond help
Well, now that I have spread cheer all around here I will go kick the cat around a bit (JUST KIDDING EVERYONE)
. Actually life is very good. The problems are just minor in the big scheme of things. Annoying , yes, but with everything NOT working, there is a whole lot more that is working.. Refuse to let all that stuff warp me up today etc.
External hard drives are very good for that too John. I have three computers going & have two externals that I transfer back & forth.. all except for one computer which simply will NOT interface with it. All are XP & have adequate memory etc..just one of the GRRRR moments with computers
Hi there ms Lysie. Just getting ready to download updates on spy programs.. and then tackle my kitchen.
have you been overwhelmed with German email? I had mentioned it last week. Lots of people at church were commenting on it on Sunday. I have a ton to do but do think I will take a dog walk with freind and his dogs to diffuse a bit sometime in late morning.
Laura Ingram is such fun to listen to..
Change The Word?
Read:
2 Timothy 3
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable. -2 Timothy 3:16
Bible In One Year: Psalm 130-132
cover The Bible, God's written Word, changes lives. Its message of salvation makes the most profound change, of course, but Scripture can also change the way we treat others. It can provide a firm foundation for society with its clear teachings on institutions such as marriage, family, and the church.
But what happens when what the Bible clearly says-as understood for centuries by learned believers and scholars alike-is rejected? Those who reject its teachings try to change the Word.
Two Greek words can help explain this: eisegesis and exegesis. Eisegesis is the process of reading into a passage something that is not there-inserting a meaning that flows from a personal agenda. By contrast, exegesis means drawing from the passage the clearly intended meaning, using context, other Scripture passages on the same topic, and legitimate tools of understanding such as Bible commentaries.
Instead of trying to change God's Word to fit our own ideas, let's allow the Word to change us. As we read His Word and obey it, the Holy Spirit will transform us into the kind of people God wants us to be.
Don't change the Word-let it change you. -Dave Branon
The Lord has given man His Word,
His will He has made known;
Let man not try to change that Word
With words that are his own. -D. De Haan
The Bible-eternal truth and never-fading beauty.
Oh my gosh, Dolly - talk about black clouds hovering above. :( Bless your heart - I was just *tired* yesterday after the weekend....what a time you've been having. :( (yet still that sunny disposition!)
I love all the neat fonts, too, and it's never been easier to 'install' them than now - no CD's to buy or anything!
Can I help you? Know you're also trying to get some opening posts ready.
Fonts! Fonts! Fonts!!
This is right up my alley!!
I'm a Fonts Fanatic!!
Ask anyone that knows me and they'll tell you that I'm obsessed over fonts.
Not because I need them or use that many. I just keep them around
just in case I would ever need it. Seems kind of foolish?
I have 2 DVD discs just burned with Fonts.
I love holiday fonts the best--especially Christmas and Easter fonts.
Absolutely fabulous!!
So? If you're in search of any new fonts, give me a holler! Hehe!!
Awesome thread!!
I'll get back with you if I need help... and will be emailing you in a few minutes before I sign off about one item I would like. Thanks as usual you are so considerate & helpful. LOVE the fonts framing.. just beautiful. All so colorful & cheery. I just read a bit of ATRW & everyone there is POd & upset.. don't need to hang there today! Lots of good minds & info but I have found with my life usually so chaotic, I need to find places of joy & friendship without hassle.. makes life so much nicer.
Thanks for beautiful post/thread. I am sure the new folks will all love it & some of the old timers might want a refresher. I have found Fonts are a little like Star Wars.. either it is wow/exciting or yawn, think I will pass & maybe take a nap!!
lol
External hard drives are very good for that too John.
That's generally what I do with my original hard drive when I'm reinstalling to a new drive: I put the old drive in a USB-connected external drive adapter. That way, copying my old data is pretty easy.
