Slovakia wants opt-outs for 7 EU states

The Associated Press, Agence France-Presse

TUESDAY, MAY 17, 2005

WARSAW President Ivan Gasparovic of Slovakia suggested Monday that smaller European Union members should seek to amend the EU's new constitution so that they do not have to accept all legislation from Brussels, the president's spokesman said.

Gasparovic made the suggestion during a meeting with the president of Estonia, Arnold Ruutel, on the sidelines of a Council of Europe meeting that is discussing the future of the human rights watchdog, said the spokesman, Marek Truba

This is hilarious. By the time this thing is set in stone, the only thing the EU countries will agree on is that they're all in the EU.

The most important thing to remember BEFORE you join anything is to have a way out.

The southern states made a SERIOUS error when they decided to join the northern states to make the US without stipulating the process for a state or states to LEAVE the union if they so wished within the constitution itself.

You would think the EU countries would learn from history and have a way clearly defined within the EU constitution for any state that wishes to leave the EU at anytime for any reason it deems appropriate. Otherwise expect a EU civil war over something within the next 100 years when a state or states tries to leave and some future president goes to war to stop them in order to "save the union"!

I don't agree, because I think this whole EU debacle is a lot of wishin' and hopin'. I don't think if anyone "leaves" anyone else in the EU will care enough to do anything about it. Then again maybe you're right, and the ultimate "triumph" of the Union will be that it lashed these states together for the ultimate goal of going to war when one of them tries to leave over trade issues. A Rube-Goldberg "Union" coming apart...
