Catholics pray for new pope in east Europe

Bratislava, Slovakia, Apr. 24 (UPI) -- Roman Catholics across central and eastern Europe offered prayers Sunday for Pope Benedict XVI, as the new pontiff was inaugurated in Rome.

Bells rang across Warsaw, Prague, Bratislava and Budapest while national television channels broadcast the inauguration ceremony live to millions of viewers.

During the Dark Ages, Christianity was saved in Europe in the west of Ireland. In our current Dark Age, Christianity may again be saved, but this time in the east of Europe. Despite (or maybe because of) Communist oppression, faith has survived there and people there have a more realistic sense of what is going on in this world. I am in Poland a lot, and the Poles are certainly better grounded than Europeans west of the Odra/Oder.

Not only Communist oppression.
I think it's the the entire history of last 200-300 years and the role played by the Catholic Church and Religion in preserving Polishness (I don't know if it's a good word - I mean everything that relates to being a Pole).

Yes, judging from my travels, the Faith is very strong in Poland and quite strong in Slovakia, less so in Hungary, and quite weak, alas, in the Czech lands.

Habemus papam! for sure now. I stayed up to watch the installation at 4 AM EST. (Am suffering for it today, but that's another story!)
