'Islamists' hit Galloway meeting
BBC ^ | 20/04/05 | anonymous BBC peon

A group of suspected Islamists have attacked a meeting of George Galloway's Respect party in Bethnal Green and Bow.

Police said there were reports 20 to 30 Asian men had disrupted the meeting and there had then been a fracas outside.

Respect said the men had threatened Mr Galloway's life and talked of a fatwa. After the meeting a man was knocked to the ground and police arrested three.

The anti-war campaigner is standing against Labour loyalist Oona King in the east London constituency.

Ms King's campaign have revealed her car was attacked over the weekend and pelted with eggs.

The alleged attack on Mr Galloway's meeting at about 2100 BST on Tuesday on the Osier estate comes during an already bitter campaign, and hours after a Muslim Council of Britain event was also disrupted.

Mr Galloway, a fervent opponent of the war in Iraq, is trying to unseat Ms King, who supported military action.

A Respect spokesman said: "He was very severely threatened, although he wasn't hurt.

"They came in, blocked the door behind them and told George he had a fatwa against him and that he would be hanged."

King taunts

Mr Galloway was then whisked away to a nearby car by his son-in-law, the spokesman said.

It is understood that one person was knocked down in the fracas and treated in hospital for head injuries.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Oona King said the candidate had been shouted at by a large group of Bengali youths wearing Respect badges or stickers while campaigning on an estate in the constituency on Saturday.

Kester Dean said: "They were shouting 'Bush and Blair murderers' and 'get out of our estate'. The car was covered in eggs."

He blamed the attack on the "poisonous atmosphere" generated in the campaign so far.

The Respect spokesman said it was not clear if the youths were Respect supporters as the badges were widely available.

"It is behaviour that we absolutely don't want to see."

This is very amusing considering that George Galloway called Bush and Blair 'wolves' for invading Iraq and that he visited Saddam Hussein and actually praised his defiance of the US/UK coalition.

It seems that these islamists are so stupid that they even threaten those westerners who are on their side!

This is the second report this week about radicals breaking up political meetings in the UK. They need to realize they have a big problem.

Aren't guns illegal in England?

Also, is it England, Britain or the United Kingdom? Does anyone know their preference?

This is an example to all of us. Regardless how nice you are to the Muslims, the minute you say ANYTHING that they don't like, they will swarm on you like killer bees. The Americans and Europeans MUST take the Muslim radicals threat seriously. Deportation, closing of Muslim schools, and mosques should be going on relentlessly until these losers realize that they are GUESTS, and they should be grateful for us accepting them in our houses.

There'll always be an England, but all 3 are correct. It just depends on which areas of land are being referred to. Usually, 'the UK' is the most appropriate term.

>>Aren't guns illegal in England?
It's hard to get a license for some guns, yes, especially the ones that are useful for self-defence.

Also, is it England, Britain or the United Kingdom?

It's all three.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the formal designation for the political state; this is commonly shortened to Britain, though that term is also used to describe the British Isles (the group of islands just off the northern coast of France).

Great Britain is the largest of the islands. Ireland is the other large island, and is now split between the Republic of Ireland (Eire) and Northern Ireland (which is commonly - though erroneously called Ulster).

England is the largest (both in area and population) of the ancient nations which inhabit Great Britain; the English conquered the independent principality of Wales a few hundred years - despite many attempts the English never managed to conquer Scotland.

At the death of Queen Elizabeth I of England there was no direct descendant, and therefore the Crown passed to King James VI of Scotland thus the Crowns of England and Scotland were united; there were immediate attempts to unite the two countries politically which failed. Eventually in 1707 the Treaty and Act of Union were passed which linked the governments of England (which included Wales) and Scotland as the government of Great Britain.

Ireland was also under the shared Crown though had its own Parliament and government. In 1801 Ireland joined with Great Britain to produce the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After much debate, and indeed fighting, most of Ireland left the U.K. in 1922 leaving only 6 counties of the province of Ulster which desired to remain.

Britain and United Kingdom are broadly interchangeable, England has a distinct meaning. Different people have different preferences - personally I identify myself as English first and British second. The greatest crime is to call a Scot, a Welshman, or Irishman English - in many cases you'd be lucky to escape with your life intact.

He only schmoozes with the Bengali Muslims at the moment as they are the biggest ethnic group in this constituency.
I would imagine that these protestors were probably Kurds who are the most pro-American muslims in the world since the US and the UK protected them after Gulf War 1.

Aren't guns illegal in England?

In Britain some effective firearms are allowed for ownership by citizens if they get the necessary license, but there are many hoops to jump through for people who wish to acquire them. Below I have outlined the details of British gun laws for you.

Currently, UK gun laws prohibit: all calibres of modern hand guns (including single-shot .22 calibre target pistols, but excluding antique muzzle-loaders and some types of muzzle-loading pistols developed to get round the ban - these require a Firearms Certificate [FAC]), semi-automatic rifles, fully-automatic rifles and pump-action shotguns that hold more than 3 cartridges. If you are caught with a prohibited gun in Britain - then under a law passed in early 2003 - you would receive a compulsory prison sentence of 5 years and a maximum sentence of 10 years, (without the chance of early parole for good behaviour). Also possession of illegal or unlicensed ammunition will get you a minimum of 2 years imprisonment in the UK.

However, double-barrelled shotguns (if you have a shotgun certificate [SGC]), most calibres of bolt-action rifles (if you have a FAC) and "high powered" - defined as over 12 ftlbs - single-shot and bolt-action air rifles (if you have a FAC) are legal, but I believe the government is manouvering to ban .50 calibre single-shot rifles and they have already banned many types of .50 ammunition.

Getting a SGC or a FAC can be difficult and the costs of housing the guns to satisfy Home Office requirements can be prohibitively expensive. In Britain since 1946, self-defence or home-defence have not been acceptable reasons to be issued with a SGC or a FAC. Therefore, for example, if you want to own a shotgun you would have to join a clay-pigeon shooting club, or be involved in vermin control (on farmland usually), so as to have a reason to give the Police when you apply for the SGC. But the Police have to do a lot of checks on you before they can grant you one. They also come out and inspect your home to see how secure it is and if you've been burgled in the past then that will make them less likely to grant you a certificate. You also have to install a shotgun cabinet in your home, (which has to be steel plated and attached to the wall, or the floor, like a safe), and the list of security requirements the Police give you for housing shotguns in your home is currently about 12 A4 pages long. If you don't own your own home and are living in a rented house or appartment, then you are very unlikely to be granted a SGC. Also, they can cancel your license if you allow your shooting club membership to expire, you haven't been to the club in a certain period of time or your doctor is worried about your mental health. It would be illegal for you to take a firearm with you to another home, (if you were going on vacation or something), unless the Police had inspected that property and you had a steel safe-like gun cabinet there. If you were caught with any of these legal firearms without a license then you would get 5 to 10 years in prison.

The only firearms which people in Britain - who are over 17 - can own without a license are: antique muzzle-loading guns (that you promise not to fire), antique guns with an obsolete calibre (so you can't get ammunition for them), or single-shot and bolt-action air rifles with a maximum power rating of 12 ftlbs or less and air pistols with a maximum power rating of 6 ftlbs or less.

The Labour party have promised to bring in even more gun laws if they are re-elected in the coming general election...

This is the second report this week about radicals breaking up political meetings in the UK.

The people who threatened Galloway in his meeting are probably the same people who invaded that Muslim Council of Britain meeting. Its certainly consistent with their MO.

Here is an interesting quote from an article I just came across:

Last night's incident was the second of the day involving young Islamic radicals out to disrupt the general election campaign. Earlier, a mob of protesters believed to be followers of the radical cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed stormed into the Regent's Park mosque in central London and disrupted a press conference by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB)...

Mr McKay said that he believed the same group, the now disbanded El Muhajiroun, was responsible for both incidents.

"We believe it was the same group, the same people that actually carried it out," he said. "It was clearly a concerted plan to cause as much disruption and get as much publicity as possible.... It was the language of El Muhajiroun, the language of bigotry..."

Mr Bakri Mohammed, a Syrian-born hardliner, has been touring the country promoting the message that voting is un-Islamic and sinful, attracting hundreds of Muslim youths still angry at the invasion of Iraq and anti-terror laws which are perceived as anti-Muslim.

BTW, the shoe bomber Richard Reid was seen at several el-Muhajiroun meetings in Ilford in the months before his failed attempt to bomb American Airlines Flight 63. This group also organised rallies across Britain in September 2003 to celebrate those it called "The Magnificent 19", (the 9/11 hijackers).
