Florida senator's aide resigns over Schiavo memo

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Mel Martinez said Wednesday an infamous unsigned memo passed around on Capitol Hill emphasizing the politics of the Terri Schiavo case originated in his office.

The memo -- first reported by ABC News on March 18 and by The Washington Post and The Associated Press two days later -- said the fight going on then over removing Schiavo's feeding tube "is a great political issue ... and a tough issue for Democrats."

"This is an important moral issue and the pro-life base will be excited that the Senate is debating this important issue," said the memo, which was described at the time as being circulated among Senate Republicans while legislation was being considered to place the Schiavo case under the jurisdiction of federal courts.

Martinez, R-Florida, said in a written statement that he discovered Wednesday that the memo had been written by an aide in his office.

"It is with profound disappointment and regret that I learned today that a senior member of my staff was unilaterally responsible for this document," Martinez said.

He said he accepted the resignation of the staffer who drafted and circulated the memo. "This type of behavior and sentiment will not be tolerated in my office," he said.

The conspiring parties were: The Clinton administration and the public employees union. It isn't complicated or secret. More importantly, it was not a failure of vision or strategy.

I take it that repressing the sense of humor must be an Amish virtue.

I don't equate welfare with starving and dehydrating someone to death.

I equate bad results to bad results. Motives and causes be damned. Liberal legislation based on causes have bad results, and the Schiavo legislation had no results other than giving false hope.

How would you have handled the Schiavo matter if you were in congress?

Why is this controversial?

Because it was poorly written.

You are correct that this kind of analysis is routine in both parties, the writer was careless in not establishing that Pubbies were interested only in saving Terri's life, not political capital for Pubbies.

This document could have been worded so that it's release to the media would have hurt only Rats.

I posted here my speculation that memo was a Democrat dirty trick. This crow I'm eating tastes awful.

Well, why don't you wait a couple days? We are not sure that an aide this "stupid" is not a Rat plant.

The textbook left infiltrates and destroys from inside like cancer.

Had they addressed the issue prior to her tube being pulled and it becoming an emergency, I would have proposed to Governor Bush a law that guardianship be stripped from anyone involved in criminal or immoral activity against the guarded individual, including adultery.

If I was in congress when the tube was pulled I would have done the same thing I did as a citizen, plead to the Governor or the President to step up to the plate.

Jeb could have taken her into custody without appealing to judge Greer. The government can take your kids if they suspect you spanked one, surely taking Terri away from her adulterous husband who was starving her wouldn't have been a reach.

President Bush could have declared her an enemy combatant and shipped her off to Guantanamo if that's what it took. Action should have been taken, not grandstanding.

But they didn't want to go outside the "law". What a joke. But this Judge Greer must be pretty powerful. After all, he laughed at congressional subpoenas, told Gov. Bush he had better not send in the DCF to try and remove Terri, and ignored any and all evidence presented by Terri's parents. I guess the rest of government was powerless to defeat Judge Greer.

A double-standard? Ridiculous. The more we b&*ch and moan about the poor persecuted Republican party, the more we sound like Democrats. You're an apologist and an embarrassment.

I am so stupid I actually thought the Republicans were serious about saving Terri. Silly me. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

That's just not true. It was all over the news when the Democrats had memos about judicial nominees. Too many on this board are apologists for the Republican Party and pawn off all mistakes and silliness as liberal media spin. Ridiculous.

No, you're wrong. It was reported about the "theft" of memos by a GOP staffer on the judiciary committee.

It just reinforces my belief that both political parties are capable of despicable actions. Power corrupts. We simply need good honest leaders.

Yes it was, but all the media wanted was to tar and feather GOPers for stealing the memos. Not one cared about the actual content or that the Dems were politicizing it. Your memory on the reporting is severely lacking.

Stupid or devious?
Are we getting hoodwinked?
This is like the Left defending the Clintonistas.
What do we really know about Martinez and his cohort?
