CAO opponents crash meeting - Democrats had hoped to keep to themselves

CAO opponents crash meeting - Democrats had hoped to keep county executive's appearance to themselves 2005-02-17 by Jamie Swift Journal Reporter

ISSAQUAH -- Fifth District Democrats, fearing a mob of rural property owners angry over the recently passed Critical Areas Ordinance, chose not to publicly advertise a Wednesday night meeting fearing opponents would crash the event.

And crash they did.

About 30 protesters -- who feel their rights to do what they wish with their property have been infringed -- surrounded King County Executive Ron Sims as he arrived at the meeting at the King County Library Service Center on Newport Way.

Sims kept his eyes straight ahead and did not address the protesters, who carried signs that read, ``They can't have 65 percent of my land,'' and shouted at him as he walked up a few steps and into the building.

``It's not your land; it's our land,'' they yelled. ``Tell the truth, Ron.'' ``Good house training, Ron.''

The protesters were allowed to attend the meeting, but were told not to bring their signs inside. Once inside, they helped themselves to the M&M cookies and coffee the Democrats had set out.

A woman sitting in the back of the room said: ``This is going to be an interesting meeting.''

No `Jerry Springer Show'

In a Feb. 3 e-mail, the chair of the 5th District Democrats wrote to other Democrats, ``We don't want this event to be confused with `The Jerry Springer Show.'''

Democrats had hoped to ``pack the floor with over a hundred Democrats so that any vocal GOP opposition that shows up can be kept under control,'' according to the e-mail.

It didn't happen. Sims was not on his home court; those angry with him made up at least half of the audience.

Demonstrator Ron Ewart of Fall City summed up the situation this way: ``It's city folk ruling rural folk.''

Presentation proceeds

Sims gave his planned presentation on King County's Critical Areas Ordinance, outlining its history, its intent and its merits.

Protesters snickered and sneered, then voiced their displeasure when it was announced Sims would be taking just three questions, and only from Democrats.

``Ah, Ron, you're going to take the heat for this,'' protester Robert Larsen boldly shouted out of turn.

``I'm used to that,'' Sims quipped.

But a curve ball was thrown when the final question was asked by a woman who turned out to be a Democrat no longer.

``I was a Democrat until September,'' said Cherri Mann, her throat quivering. ``I walked the walk and I talked the talk.''

Mann proceeded to explain to Sims that her five-acre Bear Creek property is ``worthless'' now, because of the strict development limitations of the CAO.

Mann said she needs to get an $800 permit to pick raspberries on her property, and her dog can only run free on two acres of the land.

``My property is worthless,'' she said. ``How can government overstep so much?''

Sims said he would take her phone number and investigate her case.

Then a long-haired man in the back stood up.

``It's not just her,'' he said. ``She speaks for thousands of us.''

Sims briskly made his way out the door and to his car as the Democrats thanked him and applauded him.

Larsen wasn't satisfied.

``His back is against the wall,'' Larsen said. ``His house of cards is collapsing. He didn't expect hundreds and thousands of people to call him on this communistic taking (of land). This may be the end of Ron Sims.''

LOL! I just read this over at soundpolitics.com!

I love it when Republicans turn into "rowdy protesters".
I especially loved his calling only on Dems...only to have the last woman tell him she wasn't a Dem anymore and proceed to give him heck! LOL!

Sims is having the year from hell...and he deserves every moment of it.

This critical area ordinance act is also called the 65 / 10 rule. It states that you have to leave 65% of your land in it's natural vegetative state...you cannot clear blackberry bushes, you cannot take down a dangerous tree.

You can only clear 35% of your land for lawn or whatever, and you can only build on 10% of your land...that includes barns, shops, homes, everything.

This is law in the Seattle area, and this stuff grows like a cancer...so across the country...watch out!!!

Vote Fraud List Ping

This isn't about vote fraud, but Sims is the main Dem behind the voting shenanigans in King County, WA. Glad to see he's got his hands full these days.

I would have liked to have seen a few chain saws at that meeting.

Then a sign that said "Cut Government Regulations" would be more easily understood. :-)

Thanks for explaining that. I came late to the party on this issue and haven't understood what all the shouting's about.

Helped themselves to the M&M's! How pathetic a criticism is that?

I don't understand how this meeting could have been put on for dems only. What's going on?

Ron Sims is seriously needing a new career.

"But look, you found the notice didn't you?"

"Yes," said Arthur, "yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard."

Ron Simms, Queen G. and the whole Washington state MOB is coming to an end. No amount of hiding, spinning, distorting, lying, or pandering will stop the freight train of change. Liberals have an unavoidable and progressive malady. It is THE TRUTH, and it is spreading.

NPA - I'm most definately am on your side and the side of all private property owners in this and every state. Our rights (personal), Bill of Rights (for all) are now, and have been since the mid 1970's coming up against a well organized assault, known as Agenda 21. An edict of the U.N. which uses our tax dollars, in the form of grants being given to companies, corporations, special interest groups, with strings attached, which require these organizations put pressure on these state legistrators, all across the country, to put such bogas requirements on land usage that the private property owners cannot afford to do anything on their own property(e.g., $800.00 permit for picking rasberries on her own property). Fellow citizens of this fair land, the only option we have of combatting this assualt is at the local level, with our city managers, city councilmembers, state reps, we need to elect people of integrity and strong moral fiber and who still believe in our constitution and Bill of Rights, who WILL stand against these pinko-comie fags who desire us to be under the control of the world courts. By the blood of all before US, I SAY NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What bugs me is the term "GOP Protesters". I believe most of those people were regular Washington residents, a mix of Dem/Rep/Con/Lib, not some crazed MOB of rabid talk radio zombies. Even the best spin can't cover the truth. WE THE PEOPLE ARE TAKING OUR NATION BACK.

Queen G and the King County MOB may be best thing to happen to WA state in 20 year. If they weren't completely inept and obviously corrupt, it would be much harder for people who "Talk the talk and walk the walk" to see the truth. What will be left of the true believers are the ignorant, the insiders and the insane. How can any sane person believe Ron Simms, Queen G and the KC MOB represent WE THE PEOPLE?
