Republicans Fire the First Shot!

"Reforming Social Security will not be easy, but if we approach this debate with courage and honesty, I am confident we will succeed, because our children's retirement security is more important than partisan politics."

This excerpt is from President Bush's weekly radio address. I am intrigued by the fact that he included the language 'courage and honesty' in his speech. I am further amazed that this excerpt is the leading intro on the WhiteHouse.gov pages. Undoubtedly, the words courage and honesty are going to be leading the Republican colors in the Social Security debate, clearly painting the Democrats as untrustworthy and uncourageous. The first Republican salvo was fired today.

It will be difficult for the Democrats to break the mold that will be cast. How are the Democrats going to rebut these charges? Even leading Democrats are saying that it will be political suicide to stonewall the President and fight for the status quo. They are going to be forced to suggest alternatives. So far the only alternative I have heard is raising the taxable portion of personal income and that is a 2nd down play. The Democrats have no real plan for 3rd down.

I suggest that they have been caught flat footed; caught in the transition of power currently underway. As I mentioned in the comments section to the last article, Dean will only be tossing softballs for the next six months. This leaves sacrificial lambs within the party carrying the torch for the interim. These guys will be hammered by the Republicans. Liberals commenting on this page are advocating the attack dogs to be unleashed. Where is the Democratic Party coming from and where are they heading? Do they have a viable plan for revamping social security or their rhetoric all tar and feathers? I would suggest the latter.

We live in interesting times my friends!

The Democrats have no real plan....
=====
This is expected since the SOCIALISTS do not want to stop taxing the public for their surplus each year -- and they want government (UNDER THEIR CONTROL OF COURSE) to run your life. That is why you will NEVER see a comprehensive reform package for SS from the liberal SOCIALISTS.

"courage and honesty" just became the motto of the entire Bush presidency.

The only question is whether there will even be a democrat party by 2008.

democrats debating social security remind me of that bumper sticker logic.....

There are 3 kinds of people in the world, those that understand math, and those that don't

does anyone really not believe that s.s. is a colossal ponzi-scheme ?

when it started something like for every 1 person collecting benefits over 100 were paying contributions, while nowadays the numbers are more like 1 entitlement collector for every 3 taxpayers

I probably got these numbers wrong, but the math concepts don't change
