I agree with you. What kind of motive can three men have for starting off shooting as soon as they enter? You're not exactly going to sneak away. You're going to create a panic that may not help when you want to gather up the jewelry. You're drawing attention that will lead to what we have now, a lock down, a SWAT team, etc.

A distraction for a jewelry store robbery is a possibility. Most jewelry robberies in malls are grab-and-run. The sales person shows the jewelry to a "customer" who tries it on and runs off. Happens fairly often, and some get caught. Most professional thieves stay away from being armed to avoid adding an extra charge if caught.
