Area Malls Have High Crime Weekend


(posted: February 7th, 7:30pm) After a weekend of heavy police activity at Crossgates Mall and Colonie Center, NEWS10 decided to look into crime statistics at the two major shopping centers.

Tens of thousands of people are likely to shop at the mall in any given week, but some obviously are not there to shop.

A video surveillance tape captured a pretty violent fight that took place at Crossgates in 1998. It is just an extreme example of what could happen.

"Not just at Crossgates but anywhere there is a large area for people to congregate, you're always going to have those types of issues where people's behavior is questionable," said Lt. Curtis Cox of the Guilderland Police Department.

Lt. Cox said Guilderland Police responded to more questionable behavior at Crossgates Mall over this past weekend where 43 police reports were filed on Friday and Saturday. So far three juveniles have been arrested.

There were the typical reports for stolen credit card use and shoplifting, but also calls for rock throwing, harassment and fights. Some offenders were kicked out of the mall.

"The kids come in, you know, at a certain hour, you know, they sit there, they do get loud but other than that, I haven't seen any problems since I've been there," said Sandra Rooks, a mall worker.

In 2004, Guilderland Police made 433 adult criminal arrests at Crossgates. At Colonie Center, Colonie Police arrested 199 people last year. But shoppers say they feel plenty safe.

"I think I'm very safe here when I shop. I'd rather shop here then, say, on a city street," said one female shopper.

"If you're with friends and you're with people, no one's going to, like come up to you," said shopper Alisha Polsineli.

Two of the Pyramid Corporation's 16 malls have instituted a teen curfew on Friday and Saturday nights, including the Carousel Mall in Syracuse and the Walden Galleria in Buffalo. Crossgates officials said they're "doing research" and are "looking into it" and it is something they're "not ruling out."

Oh. I hope it's ok to post this while we wait but I just asked because not to be over concerned but prepared, I treat malls like planes and hotels. I pay attention to exits. Maybe that's a false security though. I'll have to ask mall management if you can actually get out in an ER.

Consider islamofascists cells hitting 20-25 malls around the country at one time. The ripple effect would be astonishing. The economy would suffer. Many companies, like the airlines would be markedly affected. Mobility would be affected. It would have the same psycological effect or worse that 9-11 had. THis event is probably done by 3 drug induced idiots that wanted to demonstrate their testosterone levels. It is a shame. The men of this country need to take back the country. Yes, that was the first thing we noticed. She also stated that the guy was on the floor, face down and handcuffed, when she came out of the store. Later she said somebody was sitting on top of him waiting for someone to come and handcuff him...strange, but I guess it could be due to all the excitement...although she really didn't sound too upset or nervous.

I also thought her tone of voice somewhat strange, not quite combative but overly defensive. Her "redneck" comment makes me wonder if she was someone with an agenda rather than an actual witness. FNC may have been had with this woman.

Hmmmm...I guess I spent a month reading about a different story than you. Some times I really wonder.

The problem is people not being specific about "they."

What you saw were dozens and dozens of "experts" and "profilers" with no connection to the case on Fox and CNN and MSNBC speculating the snipers were white.

And the aformentioned WingNutDaily article about the guys in the (now known to be mythical) white truck being olive-skinned or Hispanic.

The bottom line is Chief Moose never got up and said "hey, we're looking for white guys." He got up repeatedly and said they were looking for a white truck or white van.
