Despite Gripes About Gay Themes, 'No Name-Calling' Initiative Spreads in Middle Schools By David Crary The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Using a young readers' novel called "The Misfits" as its centerpiece, middle schools nationwide will participate in a "No Name-Calling Week" initiative starting Monday. The program, now in its second year, has the backing of groups from the Girl Scouts to Amnesty International but has also drawn complaints that it overemphasizes harassment of gay youths.

The initiative was developed by the New York-based Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, which seeks to ensure that schools safely accommodate students of all sexual orientations. GLSEN worked with James Howe, the openly gay author of "The Misfits" and many other popular children's books.

"Gay students aren't the only kids targeted - this isn't about special rights for them," Howe said. "But the fact is that 'faggot' is probably the most common insult at schools."

"The Misfits" deals with four much-taunted middle schoolers - one of them gay - who run for the student council on a platform advocating an end to nasty name-calling.

GLSEN is unsure how many schools will participate in this week's event, but says 5,100 educators from 36 states have registered, up from 4,000 last year. Participation in a related writing-music-art contest rose from 100 students last year to 1,600 this year; the winning poem was written by Sue Anna Yeh, a 13-year-old from Sugar Land, Texas.

"No Name-calling Week" takes aim at insults of all kinds

It's simply the mind-numbed, knee-jerk, robot-like Liberal mind at work trying to figure out how they can stop calling people names ~ then, they figure, we Freepers won't be able to figure out who they are.

But Howe said critics of "No Name-Calling Week" seem reluctant to acknowledge the scope of anti-gay harassment in schools.

No they don't, schools allow all kinds of bullying behavior because teachers do not want to be on the playfield or in the halls when classes are not in session. (Not my job, I was hired to teach, if you have a problem with this, talk to my union representative.) Bullying behavior and harassment are already in violation of school rules, and teaching "no name calling" is simply a way to attack the problem with a leftist collectivist agenda that includes voting for democrats when of voting age.

In a related event, teachers unions across the country are urging an ammendment to the constitution to the effect that it be a prosecuting offense for anyone to "offend" anyone else. Just what entails "offending behavior" will be left up to trial lawyers and judges appointed by democratic presidents.

The NEA would say this is the only solution for this problem brought about by conservatives and other bigots.

Isn't "The Misfits" the novel your child's teacher was assigning?

When I have kids, there's no way they're going to public school. I'll send them to a Christian school if there's no Jewish school around.

Absolutely sick.

Unless things have changed in the 20 years since I was in high school, most of the use of anti-gay terms was directed against kids who were not gay.

The problem is the majority of teachers, in my wife's and my experience ignored, condoned, encouraged, and/or partook of bullying, particularly in K-6, only doing anything about it, when a victim of bullying fought back -- and then to punish the one who fought back. This, above all, is the reason our children have gone to a private school, at least through 8th grade.

In that light, having a "No Name-calling week" is going to do absolutely nothing.

No Name-Calling' Initiative Spreads in Middle Schools

Good luck to them on that. When I was in those grades, "queer" or "fag" would have been two of the milder names we called each other.

Yep. She got so many emails she hasn't read the book in about 4 days. Might be permanent, we'll see.

This certainly puts their agenda right out in the open, doesn't it?

And congrats on your successful activism!

THIS IS WHAT GLSEN TEACHES: If you have trouble with the links the direct link is above the page on this post.

This is all about the renewed attack by the homosexual lobby to outlaw words which can be used to oppose homosexuals. They can't stop the debate so they are going to stop the words used to articulate the debate. It is all 1984 doublespeak.

BTW: Gay Student Aliances are the recruiting arm of GLSEN.

The Homosexual Movement in Massachusetts Schools

On March 25, 2000 the Massachusetts Departments of Education and Health teamed up with the national gay and lesbian group GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network) and conducted a conference for school children and educators.  The conference was held under the guise of tolerance and safe schools.  However, as the Parent's Rights Coalition discovered, this conference was about teaching children the unsafe mechanics of homosexuality.  Following the conference, organizers denied claims of misconduct made by the Parent's Rights Coalition.  Organizers were forced to concede the truth after the Parent's Rights Coalition made public an audio recording from the conference, which substantiated their claims.  A free copy of the Parent's Rights Coalition audio tape can be obtained from the Massachusetts News web page.  Alternatively, if your computer is audio capable, then you may listen to the following 10 audio clips, in order, to hear the entire contents of the free audio tape.

A word of caution to parents:  These audio clips contain graphic sexual language and are not appropriate for children.  Note that these clips were created for the RealPlayer program.  If after clicking on the audio clips below you determine that the RealPlayer program in not on your system, you may be able to obtain a free copy of RealPlayer Basic under the Real home page located here.

However the other children who DO go to public school will be indoctrinated to the homo propaganda. They will go to feminst studies departments and other universities and they will be surrounding your children (and all our children).

Even if you send your children to private school or home school, you are part of this issue whether you like it or not. Your property taxes are going to pay for homosexuals to exclude ANY oposition to their acess to children.

You're 100% right. But there's also a flip side to it. If enough people are pulling their kids out of public schools, they'll have to face up to the problems because they won't have the funding to operate.

Children of my generation never called each other "fag" or "queer" because no one ever talked about that sort of thing... and it wasn't talked about because it was considered nasty. Our names were more about physical imperfections.. "four eyes", "cannonball", "giraffe" that sort of thing...and no one's lives were ruined because of it.. it's just something kids did.. you took your lumps and moved on.

No because the tax dollars they would have spent on your children can be used to buy all the remaining children the GLSEN materials and even give the GSA an in school office.

You will pay your tax dollars or else.....
