WASHINGTON The head of a Senate panel investigating the U.N. oil-for-food scandal called on U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to resign yesterday. In a written statement and an op-ed article in the Wall Street Journal, Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.), chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, became the first key congressional investigator to call for Annan to leave.
"It's time for Kofi Annan to step down. The massive scope of this scandal demands nothing less," Coleman said.

"Mr. Annan was at the helm of the U.N. for all but a few days of the [oil for food] program and therefore, he must be held accountable for the U.N.'s utter failure to detect or stop Saddam's abuses," Coleman said.

There is growing sentiment in Congress to reduce the U.S. contribution to the United Nations if major reforms are not made after the scandal is fully investigated. Annan's term expires at the end of 2006.

With Hillary in the Senate, I'd hate to be nominated as the "Senate Prober."
GO STORMIN NORMAN!
That's muh boy making me proud to have voted for him twice.(once for guv, once for senator, not twice in the same election, after all, we're not dems)
Send Kofi packing and Kojo to jail.
Kofi has got to go. He is worthless. The U.N. criminal court should indite him and inprison him for his corrupt behavior in the oil for food scam. Let's roll!
Ping.
Frankly, I don't care if Annan steps down or not.
Get us the hell out of the organization, and get it off U.S. soil.
The United Nations is a non-representative form of government.
Do we as a people understand what this means or don't we?
Do we as a people understand what this means or don't we?
According to ALL polls I've seen,
NO, we don't. Unbelievably, most Americans
LIKE the damn UN. So pathetically uninformed.
My perception was that we had turned the corner on this issue. Haven't recent polls shown a sharp decline in support of the U.N.? Please say yes. LOL
Kofi the Klepto needs to stay. He ensures the irrelevancy of the UN.
Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh Doughty, I wish I could.
Last Sunday morning, I actually watched a Washington Journal on C-SPAN wherein the question of the morning was: "Is the UN worth saving?"
10 to 1 said YES.
Even on the Bush supporters line.
The oil for food program was rarely mentioned.
Thanks to MSM, it's a non news issue.
That's interesting. I'd have pegged it at about 48% for and 48 against, not having heard the calls.
As good as C-Span is though, I think it and the main media players play into the global mindset. Their listeners might be expected to support governments as benaficial.
Thanks for the comments.
I always consider the source: C-SPAN.
Callers pretend to be Bush supporters when it's
so damn obvious they're not. Nonetheless, I was
not at all happy with the responces.
We have a lot of work to do here "eddycatin" the masses on the UN.
I agree, get the UN out of the US and stop funding that worthless money pit of diplomatic immunity. I'm surprised we haven't seen several organizations formed expressly for this purpose.
I'm surprised we haven't seen several organizations formed expressly for this purpose.
Now there's a great idea.
We need to make sure a UN article is posted everyday.
A TRUTHFUL article that exposes their corruption.
if we acknowledge who is in charge in that house of horrors, does that mean we have to acknowledge it exists?
I would rather ignore it, just like everyone else does. Kick them out....
When C-Span split out the calls to republican, democrat and moderate, that revealed a lot to me.
In the years since they did so, I have yet to hear one moderate phone call that supports the conservative position. I should make it known that I don't watch C-Span all that much, the call-ins anyway.
Only during special events to I watch, and then it's fairly obvious that C-Span is quite content to have 2 of 3 phone calls go against the Republicans. I even hear calls on the Republican line go against what a true Republican would.
I like C-Spin's coverage of live events, but that's about it.
Agreed. Thanks Quilla.
Agreed.
