French archaeologists said this week they had discovered an exceptional Gallic war treasure, seen here in this photo courtesy INRAP, in the south of the country, including rare war trumpets and ornate helmets(AFP/INRAP-HO)

The some 470 objects, or fragments of objects, were found at the end of September during a dig at Naves, in the department of Correze in southern France, in a ditch hollowed out of a Gallic-Roman temple, they said.

"They are celtic war trumpets which were used to scare off the enemy, by confusing the battle,"Yeah right, most likely it was used to sound the retreat.

First century BC would put it roughly in the time that Julius Caesar lived, would it not? As I recall, he wrote a book about his conquests in Gaul.

Correze in southern France, in a ditch hollowed out of a Gallic-Roman temple.. It was actually a public toilet, and it was a slit trench, not a "ditch"..
The enemy scared the crap out of them and they dropped the "accoutremants" in the confusing rush to surrender..

These trumpets were blown to sound the surrender call.

The scene as the crypt was opened...
Giscard: [gasps] Jacques! Jacques! Do you see what I see?
Jacques: Could it be? Le... Le... Le Trump d' Triomphe!
Giscard: No! No! Far more precious than that! Look again, friend! This lies at the very root of French culture and honor! C'est magnifique!
Jacques: You mean...
Giscard: Oui! Oui! Le Trump d' Surrendeur!

"Musta dropped when they were retreating...." I'll have you know that in 387 b.c. The Gauls invaded and conquered Rome! They only held the city for a few weeks before they got kicked out, but they made a BIG mess while they were there, forcing the Romans to do a LOT of repairs. Fortunately, since the invaders were French, the Romans didn't have to have to make any repairs to the Public Baths!

Upon making the discovery, the French archaeologists immediately surrendered to the helmets.
