Hostages 'freed' in Afghanistan [a military rescue]
BBC ^ | November 23, 2004 | Unsigned

Three foreign UN workers who were taken hostage last month in Afghanistan have been released unharmed, officials say.

A senior Afghan official told the BBC one of the kidnappers had been killed and four others seriously wounded in a military operation.

Annetta Flanigan from Northern Ireland, Kosovan Shqipe Habibi and Filipino diplomat Angelito Nayan were abducted at gunpoint from Kabul on 28 October.

They had been helping to conduct the recent presidential elections.

Why does the BBC insist on making it sound as if the good-hearted terrorists decided to "release" them?

The vermin at USA Today are doing the same

More from the story:

"The development follows a raid on two houses aimed at freeing the hostages on Monday morning. Ten people were detained as a result.

American and Afghan soldiers used explosives to smash their way into the houses in the pre-dawn raid, damaging doors and windows.

The three were kidnapped on 28 October when a group of armed men in camouflage stopped their vehicle, pulled them out and then drove them away at high speed.

A splinter faction of the Taleban, the Army of Muslims, said it was holding them and produced a video showing the hostages slumped against a wall.

The group demanded the release of 26 prisoners in return for their lives.

But a government spokesman expressed doubt about their claims and said it was more likely they were being held by a criminal gang."

I apologize in advance if the BBC has changed the title on you, which is the only reason that your title should not match the original source.

Your apology is accepted.

I've posted a hundreds of articles and follow the rules. I place explanatory stuff in brackets [Like this] but leave the headline unchanged.

Next time, do some research on the poster before you decide to play hall monitor.

Watchman, I thought you handled that situation very well. Aculeus' arrogant reply was uncalled for.

Oh dear, what shame and guilt I bear.

Arrogant aculeus talking back to a self-appointed lecturer.

Watchman was polite, and completely correct. And instead of just going about your business, you insist on whining and creating a scene.

Have you seen a follow-up on this one? There was supposed to be a press conference in Afghanistan today.

Good news. It won't help the PR war and the UN and critics will still hate us.

I'm sorry more couldn't have been done for those held and ultimately beheaded in Iraq.

Excuse me, but we must apologize to Coffee Annan and Jacques 'Iraq' Chirac for using force to save these hostages!!! How dare the US shoot kindly kidnappers and torturers??? I am certain that when this incident is reviewed the UN will insist that we return the hostages to the group that held them and engage in 'civilized' negotiations for their release. And, of course, we must make restitution to the families of any "freedom fighters" who were killed in this militaristic, aggressive, unfriendly operation..... /sarcasm

The only thing that would cause the BBC to stop aiding and abetting the terrorist of earth is for a terrorist bomb to take out one of the larger BBC studios. And you can bet your bippy that the terrorists don't want to remove one of their staunchest allies.

Everyone else on this thread is interested in the content of the story. You and another poster (coop) seem more concerned about something that did not happen.

Again: the BBC story -- and its headline -- which was "Breaking" on their site at the time was copied verbatim by me.

You chose to come on the thread and give me a lecture on posting manners because you clicked on a later version of the BBC story.

Contrary to coop's intrusive remark, presuming that a veteran poster (like me) needs a lecture on posting manners is the height of impoliteness.

As a few minutes thought will tell you people (like me) who post a lot of articles actually contribute more to the site than those who do not post articles or who post few of them.

Nothing is more annoying than to be the recipient of totally inaccurate criticism, compounded by some fool who thinks I ought to simply accept without responding inaccurate gratuitous criticism delivered in a pompous -- Gore-like! -- tone.

You're the only one on this thread busy lecturing, Your Imminence.
