TBO ^ | Nov 22, 2004

An infant died Monday after her mother called 911 to report that she had cut off the baby's arms, police said.

When authorities arrived, they found the baby with her arms severed and the mother waiting calmly with blood on her clothing, police said. The baby died at a hospital.

The 35-year-old mother, whose name was not released, was being questioned by police.

Authorities said other family members, including two school-age children, lived together in the Plano apartment.

I was going to say that about men. There is all this compassion for sadistic murderers who happen to be women.

I worked with autistic children as a therapist years ago. When they were on Haldol, we weren't able to do anything constructive with them. It was zombifying!

Yes it's true that almost everyone seems to blame everything on some mental condition. Regardless your son-in-law deserved justice. He deserved equal protection under our laws and he didn't get it. I'm sorry that he didn't and it is our society at large that is to blame for that as we delve further and further into a blameless society where no one is held responsible for what they've done.

My condolences to your family especially since the verdict insured no peace all of you.

What is it with postpartum depression? I never had it- not with either of my boys.

I never had it with any of my five children.

Postpartum depression is being embraced now. Just ask the new NJ Gov. Codey's wife. She threatened to kill her children under post partum and received an award.

BTW, yes, I guess I had Postpartum. I cried easily. But I never had the aggressive propaganda. I've heard of women wanting to hurt the children. I only wanted to embrace mine more.

I agree with you in part in that there are probably no totally safe psychiatric drugs - but when faced with a life-threatening mental illness, sometimes there is no choice.

But I would also include steroids in that list of potentially dangerous drugs. People do not realize that steroid medications can have devastating psychiatric side effects, especially for someone with an underlying mental illness. I speak from personal experience.

I don't think PPD is insanity. It may be worse. I think unless someone has suffered severe depression or known someone who does it's difficult to understand. This is why I think the anger at Andrea Yates husband and why I ask where everyone was in this and other cases.

I remember seeing a case of a woman who was in severe PPD and her husband, instead of staying home to help her when she was in obvious distress, went to play golf all day on a Saturday. He returned and wanted to know where the baby was -- she didn't even REMEMBER the baby and it took forever to find out she taken the baby out, drowned and buried it and then gone home and to bed...

There's plenty of women and men who physically abuse their children or in some cases one of many children, and I have absolutely zero sympathy for them when they kill their children. PPD is not in the same category.

Crying easily is "Baby Blues." Baby Blues is a different situation from PPD. PPD usually comes on later. If you read the Marie Osmond post (above) it explains how it's a hormonal-thing. Our hormones are a very insidious thing.

No, I missed it. I'm still in pings and not back to threads yet. My pings are over flowing :( I will mark to come back to. Hence my response, to bump for reading. Bump.

You're absolutely correct. Steroids are devastating for us AND for our pets, too. Another issue is vaccines. Not so much the "vaccine" itself, but the carrier thermirosol(sp) (which is 65% mercury and believed to be a contributing factor in autism). Our society would be much better off if we deep-sixed most drugs and looked for natural alternatives.

Once again a real tragedy is deflected to discuss abortion. Do you guys turn every tragedy involving a child into an abortion rant? IMHO, it's very misplaced and diminishes the evil that's taken place here.

I respect that you are concerned about political opportunism. I must disagree, though, about "diminished" evil.

There is no special interest "payoff" for achieving a culture that respects life.

Is the dismemberment of an 11 month-old less despicable than the dismemberment of a pre-born?

Society and the media are transfixed on Scott Peterson's killing of his wife and unborn child, yet are the thousands of other murdered or beaten wives LESS important?

Let us not diminish this situation, yes, but let us not hide our heads from the others either.

If she is a schizophrenic, she was acting under severe delusions that made perfect sense to her at the time, but to no one else. For example, she may have believed that cutting off the child's arms was the same as giving her a haircut and never expected any ill effects. Then when the child began to bleed profusely the mother became alarmed and at that point called 911. Schizophrenics suffer under delusions (false beliefs) that could potentially cause great harm to themselves or others. Some schizophrenics have mutilated themselves because of their delusions and hallucinations. Absent any other explanation I am inclined to believe that the mother is schizophrenic because that is the most probable conclusion. Since she is not a terrorist living in Fallujah, I doubt that she did it merely out of a desire to be evil. I'm no bleeding heart and I believe that she deserves punishment for what she is done, but at the same time I know something about mental illness.

I work for an MD and we're seeing a lot more Bipolar and Schizophrenics than ever for some reason. This is why, while what happened to this baby is devestating, I hope everyone looks at the whole picture. IMO it's one more case of an over-loaded or ignorant system breaking down. Happening all too often these days and our children are suffering because of it.

That doesn't answer the question of equal protection for that baby. We have got to get a grip on ourselves and say right is right and wrong is wrong.

This in word and deed is no different from the terrorists who behead people. Should we listen to their rationale of what could lead them to do such a thing? Should we pity them? Or should we seek justice for those who were wronged?

There was a victim in this atrocity already it was the baby who had her arms cut off by her own mother. We have to stop rationalizing murder. We can ask why but we have to stop excusing.

I once worked for a babysitting service. Once the service sent me to a very beautiful upper middle class home. The lady of the house looked like a young Kathleen Turner. In the middle of giving me the usual baby care details for her infant son, she started crying and telling me about her problems. My heart went out to her. I told her that I hated to see her in so much pain and that she should see her doctor ASAP because there was medication available that would make her feel 100% better. A couple of months later I read in the newspaper that she had shot her baby son in the head then turned the gun on herself. She died, and the bahy survived with brain damage. It was such a terrible tragedy and so unnecessary if only she had sought treatment.

Respectfully, many of us feel that stories like these: murdered babies and children at their parents' hands... are the end result of the culture of death diminishing the quality, sanctity and wonder of Life.
