This was not the breakout year for young voters that some had anticipated. Fewer than one in 10 voters Tuesday were 18 to 24, about the same proportion of the electorate as in 2000, exit polls indicated. Still, with voter turnout expected to be higher overall, more young people appeared to have come out.
A vigorous push on college campuses by both parties and national mobilization drives had raised expectations that 2004 would be the year of the youth vote.

It is sad that a lot of young people aren't voting. But the funny thing is, there are a lot of students at my school that are very political (me included), and all of us are under 18! Hopefully our politic awareness will stay with us. :)
23 and voted for Bush!
The great thing is that most of the ones that did show up and vote for Kerry, will say it wasn't worth it, and never vote again.
I'm 29 myself and voted for Bush but unfortunately I live in Massachusetts.
True there were some liberal figureheads trying to wrongfully persuade young voters... and true, there are still politically unaware young voters... but, everywhere I look, younger people (myself included) are becoming more and more politically aware and passionately opinionated. Most of the problems were probably caused by what I witnessed here in my college: students would be registered to vote, but they didn't know how to get an absentee ballot, or they were "too far from home" to go and register in their hometown. Most of them didn't bother to vote because of this. Also, in my state, Texas, it was inevitable Bush was winning Texas, so they "didn't feel guilty" but the one thing most young voters (even politically aware voters) failed to realize is that every vote does count, for the popular vote. The higher the popular vote for Bush, the less the liberals can complain without sounding like sore losers.
I guess I'm not so sad though, Kerry was expecting the younger voters to carry him over a great deal... with 1:10 registered voters between 18-24 voting this season, it sure hurt Kerry! At least it didn't help him! Hallelujah, Amen!
Goes to show how effective all those concerts were.
Let's hope that We are able to get the educational system changed and these kids more educated and aware over the next four years. Time to move to charter schools or home education and get rid of the NEA. And get our books back to what we should be teaching and not what the UN says we have to teach.
