2004 Not a Breakout for Youth After All
By SIOBHAN McDONOUGH Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) -- This was not the breakout year for young voters that some had anticipated. Fewer than one in 10 voters Tuesday were 18 to 24, about the same proportion of the electorate as in 2000, exit polls indicated. Still, with voter turnout expected to be higher overall, more young people appeared to have come out.
A vigorous push on college campuses by both parties and national mobilization drives had raised expectations that 2004 would be the year of the youth vote.
Exit polls indicated that young people who did vote were strongly supporting Democrat John Kerry over President Bush, while they were evenly split between Bush and Democrat Al Gore four years ago.
The exit polls were conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
Once they heard the draft threat was farce, they didn't feel the need to vote.
LOL!!
I voted and I am in the 18 to 24 group.
My sons are 22 and 19 year old college students and they both voted for Bush and said that all of their friends did too.
I am 21 and I voted absentee two weeks ago for W. My boyfriend voted today in VA for W as well. Not sure who my 19 yr old brother voted for, but he did go vote.
My campus was also a voting site today. A lot of kids were talkin the talk, but I doubt on this rainy day of cancelled classes that many got up and stood in line.
This 24 year old voted before going to work this morning...
Ahem. Wrong.
Sentence 1: same proportion of youth as 2000
Sentence 2: increased NUMBER of youth from 2000
Explanation: 1000 voters aged 18-24, 10,000 voters over 24 (in 2000) = 1 out of 10
2000 voters aged 18-24, 20,000 voters over 24 (in2004) still equals 1 out of 10. SAME PROPORTION, MORE YOUTH.
That's a major thing for me. I would like some private investment. I'm already working on a 401k. I would like some more options.
