ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, seeking to defuse an unprecedented crisis in the EU executive, said Rocco Buttiglione would most likely be replaced as Italy's candidate for the European Commission.
"Buttiglione will remain a minister (in the Italian government). I think that is the way it is going to end up," Berlusconi told reporters late on Friday after a hectic day of discussions among Europe's leaders.
"It is useless to deny that this is the most likely outcome after the meetings that we have had here today," he said of Buttiglione, 56, Italy's European Affairs minister.
The sudden about-face by Italy came at the end of a long day of ceremonies in which Europe's leaders gathered in Rome to sign the first pan-European constitution, designed to ensure improved governance in the newly enlarged 25-nation bloc.
But the festivities were marred by the crisis that has been hanging over incoming European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso's executive, a crisis that was sparked by Buttiglione's conservative views on homosexuality and marriage.

FYI and ping lists.
This is a sad event, no doubt about it. I guess there's no room in the EU for a man who's not willing to go along with 100% of the radical gay rights agenda.
But Berlusconi's one of the good ones, which leads me to believe that he's simply "picking his battles", and has more important things to worry about (like the WOT).
Silvio will make this up to Italy, I'm sure.
Bump and ping.
