Bill Kristol pushing the dump Cheney for McCain rumor just now on Foxnews?

Monday, August 30, 2004 RUMOR: MCCAIN TO REPLACE CHENEY? Bill Kristol was just on FoxNews irresponsibly disseminating a rumor that he began the previous day on FoxNews Sunday with Brit Hume. Since I love the rumor and fervently wish for its accuracy, it is my pleasure, nay my responsibility, to continue its irresponsible dissemination.

Reading the tea-leaves, Kristol has concluded that McCain might be poised to replace Cheney on the ticket. Here’s the logic: After his convention speech tonight, McCain is flying out to New Mexico to hook up with the President and introduce him to the American Legion convention and then he’s going to travel with the President to Nashville. Kristol wonders what could possibly occasion this flurry of McCain activity. He speculates that Bush and McCain could make an announcement together in New Mexico and then later in the week triumphantly wing their way back to New York.

Kristol also perceives a couple of other portents. For the last several weeks, Dick Cheney has been pretty much playing Tupper-ware parties in Fargo. And last week, Karl Rove said that he wants to model the RNC along the lines of Roosevelt’s 1944 convention where Roosevelt positioned himself as a successful war president and dropped his Vice President in favor of a far more popular and less controversial politician.

Left unsaid in Kristol’s analysis but clearly implicit is that dropping Cheney for McCain would be pure political gold for the Bush administration. Whether deserved or not, John McCain has become a virtual political saint in this country. Both parties, when they seek to prove the right-ness of one of their positions, eagerly seek out a McCain quote to serve as support. Indeed, the one thing that both parties seem to agree on is that John McCain’s word is final.

But how moderate is McCain?

I think McCain likes to get us all riled up into thinking he is not a good Republican because that helps his image on the MSM.

On what issues would you call McCain a "moderate" or at least compared to Bush. On most congressional scorecards he is only a bit more centrist than the GOP average.

For one thing, he has an unblemished Planned Parenthood score rating of 0% from 1996-2003.

I am not saying he is necessarily conservative, but he is definitely not a liberal. He is definitely right of center and his magic is that he has the middle third of this country sold on him.

McCain is the author of McCain/Feingold.
Both sides of the debate have deep-seated hate for this censorship.
Believe it when I tell you that NRA and ACLU could develop a partnership and run against McCain for his facist little law.
The base will not vote for McCain on Bush's ticket, as it makes Bush weak on terror and comes across as he not taking the election or his job seriously by just playing to the wind.
The whole "Leadership" meme would be toilet paper. A "leader" doesn't make fair-weathered decisions based on polls - people like Kerry and Clinton do.

It is not going to happen! If this was even considered it would have happened after the dem convention. not now, heck the delegates are about to put Cheney's name in nomination.

Hopefully not McCain, but if they want to tease with his name, that's alright.

Don't stay home. Vote for all the other races and leave the Prez race blank if you must. You can always claim that you were confused and disenfranchised after the fact anyway.

Sigh.
Me too.
I didn't vote for his old man because he allowed the Iraqis to be slaughtered because the UN dictated the rules of engagement.
First time in my entire life I sat home.

Like I said, I think you are right about not needing to do anything this drastic... it would alienate a lot of us. But I am young, and I guess I would like to hear some of the reasons why many conservatives believe McCain to be so liberal. I have done **some** looking up his voting records and they don't seem very bad. Please inform me otherwise. I am not saying that tongue in cheek. I am young and need political re-education.

1) Who decided to give the party to the "moderates?"
2) What reason do we have to "respect" McCain?
3) Prison, trumped because he didn't lie?
4) Whatever McCain does, he does for John McCain, Bush is just too kind and forgiving.

I was thinking about this, and Kristol might be onto something. But I dont think it would be McCain he would dump Cheney for. If we were to use the reasoning of Kristol and Cheney announces on Wednesday night that he cant continue on I have a hunch it would be Powell chosen. Something about the way Powell will be gone and his seeming dislike of the current political climate tells me mea culpa if he is chosen. Just a guess, it wont happen but I think MCCain really doesnt offer that much, not to mention that there is far more dislike of McCain in the party than there is for Powell.

Seems to me that this is a great rumor for drumming up interest in the convention. It will give the MSM something else to talk about besides the demonstrations - since the media wing of the democrap party certainly would not want to cover the speeches and the issues.

Problem with Rove's scenario. FRD wanted Wallace. It was the party pros and those who saw the dangers in Wallace's Socialism that wanted him dumped. Secondly, Truman was hardly a popular politician. He was a product of Missouri's Prendegast Gang and in the days before 24 hr news it took a real effort for a politician to become truly popular outside his own region. Truman was an unknown in most of the nation. One reason for his acceptance by the party pros was that FDR's real health was unknown to them. It is very unlikely they would even have nominated FDR had his true condition been known.

Interesting post on McCain...

What would be the comparable favorable/unfavorable percentages for Guiliani.

Why do I ask?

Because another conservative forum claims that Cheney is to be asked to "go quietly" and that the Bush/Guiliani appearance last week was a test run for the real thing.

( Don't believe a word of it ;-) ;-) ;-) of course! )

With Bush surging, there is no reason to even consider this now.

McCain's popularity was created by the press because he is a RINO. If he stopped being a RINO, they would reverse his popularity overnight.

This is silliness.

That's total crap.

Bush likes Cheney (so do I), Bush is loyal and Cheney is a big help to him.

McCain? That is so bogus. Bush doesn't like him, Republicans don't like him.

The only people who like him are Cindy and the press.

Hey Kristol,ya dance with whom ya brought to the dance!
Cheney is the man! PERIOD!
If anyone should have been the replacement it should have been Rice as VP and Cheney CIA but it's too late now to switch with only two months til the election!
McCain needs to concern himself about his own reelection.

NEVER. NOT JUST NO, BUT HE** NO.

I am personally very glad I don't live in Arizona where I would have only had McINSANE to vote for as the Republican.

He is unstable and getting more so every day. I don't know if it is medical- connected to his cancer history- or old age or rage over not climbing into the White House by now, but John McInsane is just that.

I don't trust him any more than I trust a rattlesnake. I shoot them. It bothers me to have to say all this about a Republican, also. But this feeling gets stronger EVERY passing day.

For Bush to drop Cheney and pick McCain would be the same as the "Read my lips" debacle of 1992.

You know this won't happen. Cheney opened the convention at Ellis Island, he is high-profile all the way. It is a little late to change EITHER ticket, but rumors will probably continue to the end!
