Not to be really picky, but I would have a real problem - were I an orthodox Jew - of seeing someone who is not Jewish wearing a yarmulke. Just as I would have a problem with a non-Catholic receiving communion at Mass (were I Catholic).
It looks less phony that it would if it were John Kerry, but it still look staged.

My understanding is that it is considered polite (required) for a Gentile to wear a yarmulke if he is at a Jewish event. Obviously in synagogue, and I suppose at other times too, bar mitzvahs and so forth. They'll generally provide yarmukles if wearing one is expected, and I'm certain the presidential etiquette people got it right in this case.

That is generally prohibited, with some exceptions -- very different.

"Just as I would have a problem with a non-Catholic receiving communion at Mass (were I Catholic)."if you were, you would also have a problem with the apostles of the 1st century partaking of Communion, as none of them were Catholic either.

I had the incredible fortune of visiting the Western Wall last November, and I had the impression that they prefer even non-Jews (I am Christian) to wear the yarmulke. They give them to you as you enter, and the guide I was with suggested I take one. I hope that wasn't insensitive, but I gladly obliged.

Apples and oranges. If I were in a Catholic Church, I'd respect their wishes and traditions, but men of all faiths should wear yarmulkes in synagogues. And that should also be respected.
