Apollo Anniversary: Moon Landing "Inspired World"

On July 20, 1969, at 10:56 p.m. ET, Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped off the "Eagle" onto the surface of the moon and said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Thirty-five years later, Steven Dick, NASA's chief historian at the space agency's headquarters in Washington, D.C., said that a thousand years from now, that step may be considered the crowning achievement of the 20th century.

"Putting a man on the moon not only inspired the nation, but also the world," Dick said. "The 1960s were a tumultuous time in the U.S., and the moon landing showed what could be accomplished at a time when much else was going wrong."

Armstrong's step was the culmination of a goal set forth by President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961. In a speech before a joint session of Congress, the President had announced his objective of "landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth" before the end of the decade.

The goal set in motion Project Apollo. Armstrong—together with astronauts Michael Collins, and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr.,—lifted off on the Apollo 11 mission on July 16, 1969, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 9:32 a.m. ET.

About 76 hours later, the spacecraft entered lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin boarded the lunar module, known as the Eagle, for descent to the lunar surface. There, it landed in a region called the Sea of Tranquility at 4:18 p.m. ET.

Armstrong took his historic step six hours later, as millions of people around the world watched on television. The landing drew the largest television audience for any live event up until that time.

Moon Return?

The continuing interest in the moon, according to Dick, is one of the reasons President George W. Bush's Vision for U.S. Space Exploration—outlined in a speech at NASA headquarters on January 14—is so important.

The vision, which has been widely criticized for its funding, appropriateness, and time line, calls for a return to the moon no later than 2020. The idea is to foster further scientific study of Earth's satellite and to use it as a stepping stone to get to Mars and beyond.

"The new space vision will perhaps have an even broader impact than the moon, and certainly a more sustained one," Dick said. "In addition to technologies that will be developed, the new space vision carries on the long American tradition of exploration in the spirit of Lewis and Clark."

On another topic, today is my sixth year anniversary at FR. I *knew* you all would want to know!

Wow! Went to bed at 10:30, slept an hour, and wide awake already, came to check The Finest...love the presentation, Billie - - it's really spectacular.

It so happened we left the service on 1 July1969 and went to Titusville, Florida to visit my husband's brother and family. Jack worked at The Cape, and urged us to stay to see the flight lift off.

We positioned ourselves right across the Indian River from the Cape, and it was incredible to see and *hear* the launch, reverberating with incredible intensity!

Believe dansangel was there, too, and some other Finest Folk, I seem to remember...

When I lived in Melbourne (same county as Cape Canaveral) from 1957 to 1961, I saw many of the early space and manned flights go skyward.

I remember it like it was yesterday. What an exhilarating moment! I was 12 at the time. The Dish is a cute movie set in the tracking station that brought the pics of the event to us. I recommend it. It was released in 2000.

Wow Billie, This is a great thread! Can you imagine this - My great grandmother was born right after the War of Norther Aggression and passed away approximately 7 years before Sputnik?

Took my son to the Cape when he was 12 or 13. Neither of us wanted to leave! They didn't have any flights scheduled for the time we were there but they were moving the rockets to the launch pad. The machine the were using was enormous and they could only move about 3 miles per hour.

One night on the newscast the weatherman made mention of the fact that if people would watch the sky at a certain that night they would be able to see a lift off from the Cape. Sho' nuff we did. Awesome, really awesome.

Does God Love Me?

It's not easy to understand the depth of God‘s love for us. Because of our pride and fear, we fail to grasp how undeserving we are and how free His love is.

At times I struggle with pride, so I tend to believe that I have earned any love I receive. Pride tells me that I am loved only when I am lovable, respectable, and worthy.

At other times I feel the tug of fear. Deep down inside, I know that I don‘t deserve the love I get. My motives are never pure, and I fear I will be rejected if they are exposed. So even while I am basking in acceptance, I live with the fear of being unmasked, revealing that I am much less than what others think me to be.

When I consider my relationship with God, therefore, I tend to feel that His affection for me is based on my performance. When I do well, He loves me; but if I foul up, then I expect only His scorn.

Yet God does not love us because we deserve it. He loves us in spite of what we are. In 1 John 4:10 we read,“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son." Because of what Jesus Christ has done for us, we know we are always loved by God. That simple truth shatters our pride and dispels our fear. —Haddon Robinson
