TOP STORY
A candidate comes to town
* John Edwards spoke to local Democratic faithful at a fundraiser held at the Balboa Bay Club on Saturday.
Several local Republicans protested outside.

Deirdre Newman, Daily Pilot

NEWPORT BEACH — Eclipsing the usually Republican light that shines from Orange County in almost every election, vice-presidential candidate John Edwards snatched up some of his own Newport Beach sunshine to the tune of a $1,000-a-plate luncheon. But local Republicans did their best to cast a dark cloud over the event...

-- snip --

...
The protest across the street from the club included Republicans from conservative venues like Free Republic, a conservative, Internet news forum, and others who came on their own, waving signs that said things such as, "Dick Cheney can be president."

"I'm standing with President Bush in his fight against terrorism," said Frances Akhavi, of Corona del Mar. "I believe we're doing the right thing going into Iraq. I believe Bush is not only making us safer but the world a safer place."

Frank Barbaro, chairman of the Orange County Democratic Party, said he wasn't impressed with the protest.

"I'm not sure what they're protesting," Barbaro said. "I didn't know you could protest someone running for office. They said bring it on. Well we're here."

Barbaro said he expected Edward's visit to raise between $450,000 and $500,000. That was a conservative estimate, he said.

And they are raising money for what? Next week they get federal funds and I thought that was all they could use, or am I mistaken about the rules?

You are mistaken!

Rules is a word that does not exist in the 'rat vocabulary. "But that's different" is their motto.

Steve.

Q Mr. President --

THE PRESIDENT: Yes, speak up. I'm getting a little --

Q If I could try another Edwards question.
He's being described today as charming, engaging, a nimble campaigner, a populist, and even sexy.

How does he stack up against Dick Cheney?

THE PRESIDENT: Dick Cheney can be President.

Next.

As a long-time veteran of East Coast protests, I doff the hat and offer profound thanks for your excellent work on the West Coast. That's an excellent sign. Short, sweet, to the point, accurate. Can't ask for anything better than that.

Edwards finds converts in O.C.
Democratic running mate gets warm welcome in GOP territory.

By MARTIN WISCKOL
The Orange County Register

NEWPORT BEACH – When John Edwards brought his talk of optimism and unity to the heart of Republican country Saturday, it wasn't just Democratic stalwarts shelling out $1,000 each and praising John Kerry's running mate for bringing needed charisma to the ticket.

The Balboa Bay Club luncheon of 400 or so included new Democrats who'd never been to a political event before...

-- snip --

...a handful of the president's supporters demonstrated at Saturday's event...

-- snip --

About 20 demonstrators held signs supporting Bush outside the gated hotel resort.

"I support President Bush," said Francis Akhavi, an Iranian-American living in Corona del Mar who said he had two cousins killed in Iraq during Saddam Hussein's rule. "We're so happy he got Saddam and is fighting terrorism."

But Aitken said even the protesters reflected the Democrats' growing strength in the county, which has long been host to major GOP figures.

"This is a great day, when we can do this here in Newport Beach, with them protesting against us."

"I'm not sure what they're protesting," Barbaro* said. "I didn't know you could protest someone running for office. They said bring it on. Well we're here."
    * Frank Barbaro, chairman of the Orange County Democratic Party

Get with the program, Frank. "bring it on" is your side's slogan with respect to the campaign. Bush is working to make the world safe from terrorism while your boy is trying to make it safe for trial lawyers.

I think that Barbaro was expanding upon THIS (short excerpt) from the pre-FReep article in the Daily Pilot/L.A. Times:
-- snip --

...Not taking it quietly, Republicans are planning a grass-roots protest across the street in the parking lot of Taco Bell.

"We just wanted to show that Orange County is Republican, and this is a county that will carry President Bush," protest organizer Anthony Kua said.

-- snip --

"I think [Edwards' visit] is emblematic of our feeling that the Kerry-Edwards ticket will appeal to everyone, so we're going to the Republicans' backyard to send off the next vice president to the [Democratic national] convention," Barbaro said.

-- snip --

Republicans will be protesting Edwards' bid for the vice-presidency and demonstrating their conviction that Orange County voters will solidly support President Bush in November, Kua said. He considers the event something of an affront.

"You don't have a Democratic event in the heart of a Republican county because you think you're going to get a lot of support. You do it to get publicity," he said. "You do it to stir the pot."

-- snip --

News of the Republicans' protest left Barbaro puzzled as to what Edwards has done that they're decrying.

"Maybe they're assuming he's going to be the next vice president and they want to get their attitudes in early," he said. "Unless they think Newport Beach should be somewhere Democrats can't venture, I see no reason for their presence."
