Because she's Hillary's liberal Democrat friend, Martha thought she could lie to authorities just like Hillary and get by with it.

She got off easy.

That's understated, kinda like her new wardrobe.

I hate liars and anyone who accepts lying as a legitimate way of doing business.

That is exactly what Martha said during a interview before the incident. She did not heed her own advise.

No, but it was, and continues to be, a federal crime to lie to FBI agents. She did so. End of story.

There are lots of federal crimes. Tell me, is it worse to lie under questioning, or worse to lie in a courtroom under oath? I'm genuinely curious about how many people have gone to jail for claiming to be innocent of an offence that was never even formally charged. And didn't the prosecution in a related case engage in a bit of lying, about the very evidence MS is going to jail for. (I admit the details of this escape me.)

Martha got in the way of a federal government that was trying to distract people from its own misdeeds.

What on earth does this mean? How did Martha's lying about a stock deal "get in the way" of "misdeeds" by the feds?

She probably lied to them too.

People who lie under oath should be prosecuted and punished appropriately. People who lie during depositions, or even simply under questioning in an investigation should also be prosecuted and punished if it is a violation of the law. I don't care if you are Joe Public, or the President of the United States. Break the law, face the consequences.

"So it's OK to lie to the FBI - assuming you're one of the elite?"

No, its not okay to lie, but most folks don't get 5 months in prison for it. Unless you're rich and white and a (gasp) capitalist.

Are you telling me that it is now a felony in America for a person being questioned by the police to assert their innocence?

Look, I readily concede that this has all turned out to be a circus. But don't insult our intelligence by understating the case, either. She did not simply "assert her innocence." She did far more than that. The 5th Amendment does not give you the right actively hamper an investigation, it only gives you the right to do nothing to help.

Didn't she also doctor phone logs and try to get her employees to commit perjury? The crimes people commit to cover-up their “Small Personal Matters” are usually worse than their “Small Personal Matter”. Look at the extent Clinton went to cover-up his small personal matter.

That certainly is wrong. Anyone who lies like this should be brought up on charges and prosecuted...

Under normal circumstances, Martha's case would have been handled by the SEC as a civil matter.

I beg your pardon, this is rather PERSONAL....... :o)

NO need to beg...Martha doesn't see the need either. It is personal, especially for all those millions who are invested in the stock market. Ms. Stewart doesn't seem to get it and neither do you. She may be your princess but she is a common crook and at this point and worse, she refuses to apologize. Apparently she has not taken the advice she gives to those who buy into her "gracious" hostess syndrome.

So she was under oath? This was a formal deposition?

"All of that for telling a lie to cover up a stock transaction that probably was not illegal in the first place."

I have zero sympathy for her. I believe it was an illegal trade, she knew it. Then, rather than try and do an honorable thing by admitting it and correcting it, she lied, tried to cover it up, and had others lie for her. Not to mention blame everyone except herself. She made this bed, no one else.

Lost something like $30 million when the price of her company's stock dropped.

How come no one wants to remember how many small investors lost millions on the value of her stock? Those pension funds that got hit are your future payouts when you retire, folks. Get a grip here.
The woman was a STOCK BROKER before she was the darling of homemaking. She knew the rules chapter and verse. She was a cheap Bimbo who didn't want to lose on a stock that was dumping. How can she be innocent of insider trading if Sam Waksal is guilty? Put this together!!! She is very guilty of all she was convicted of and more.
The next question is did she drain her company of funds to pay her legal fees??? If so, the shareholders got a smaller return on their money so that Martha could try to weasel out of her mess of her own making. I don't feel sorry one little bit for her. I really feel sorry for the people who invested their hard earned $$$$ into her stock.
