NEW YORK - Martha Stewart was sentenced Friday to five months in prison and five months of home confinement for lying about a stock sale.
Just before her sentence was pronounced, Stewart asked the judge to "remember all the good I have done."
"Today is a shameful today. It's shameful for me, for my family and for my company," she said.
U.S. District Court Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum noted that she had sentenced Stewart on the bottom of the confinement range.
I was reading that she had asked the judge to defer any prison time until her appeals are exhausted. Anyone have an update as to whether the judge conceded to her request?
I do not understand why her show still comes on daily here in my home town. I do not understand why KMart still promotes her products. I do not understand why she will stay one day a week in a prison cell......................... DOUBLE STANDARDS.. LIBS WIN AGAIN.
"It's a good thing."
No, Martha, breaking the law for an amount of money that to you is totally insignificant ($51,000.00) is shameful. Prison is where criminals go for committing crimes.
No, I think she's going in today.
CNN says her sentence was stayed pending her appeal.
She'll never serve a day in jail, mark my words...
Lets hope she does not become somebody's jail __ch.
No they don't...Just wait until we see the spoofs with prison cell decorating tips.
Yes, she got a stay.
That would be just fabulous!
I suppose it doesn't matter that she was never charged with insider trading. She was convicted for lying to police.
She was not even under oath.
I wonder how many people have gone to prison for lying while being questioned by police.
"I do not understand"
Innocent until proven guilty?
She is not going to the slammer for anything to do with the stocks. She is going because she lied to an all powerful government. She wasn't all that thrilled about Imclone anyways. The month before the sale in question, she sold 48,000 shares.
Too bad.
But the problem is, she wasn't convicted for the bad deal. She was convicted for lying to the police during their investigation.
Martha Stewart was convicted for lying to federal investigators and nothing else. Other than that I believe she did nothing wrong. She shouldn't do any jail time and the lesson learned is never cooperate with federal investigators, call your lawyer, take the 5th, and see them in court.
In Saudi Arabia, they'd cut her head off.
There's one simple explanation:
She hasn't been shown to have done anything wrong.
Since they couldn't prove that her stock dealings were illegal, they decided to accuse her of misleading the first investigators to question her.
Now, for the "crime" of making a misleading reply while NOT under oath, NOT in the presence of her lawyer, she is financially ruined, can no longer be president of the company she founded, can't even vote (no doubt for John Kerry, so there IS a silver lining to this story), and probably will never make another TV show.
are those penalties harsh enough for you? Or are you like those Dimocrats who think any "rich" or successful person should be dragged out and shot?
