Former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, dispatched by the CIA in February 2002 to investigate reports that Iraq sought to reconstitute its nuclear weapons program with uranium from Africa, was specifically recommended for the mission by his wife, a CIA employee, contrary to what he has said publicly.

Wilson's assertions -- both about what he found in Niger and what the Bush administration did with the information -- were undermined yesterday in a bipartisan Senate intelligence committee report.

MARCH 17, 1999 : (IRAQ NEWS COMMENTS ON INCOMING NSC DIRECTOR OF THE NEAR EAST AND SOUTH ASIA DIRECTORATE KEN POLLACK : POLLACK HAS DESCRIBED REMOVING SADDAM HUSSEIN AS A 'FANTASY' - DOES THIS SIGNAL CLINTON ADMINISTRATION CHANGE IN IRAQ POLICY?) THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary March 17, 1999 PRESS BRIEFING BY DEPUTY NATIONAL SECRETARY ADVISOR JIM STEINBERG The Briefing Room, 12:45 P.M. EST [Excerpt] Q: Jim, can you tell us -- an Iraq related question -- can you tell us what Ken Pollack is going to be doing for the NSC? And given that he's described removing Saddam Hussein as a fantasy, does that signal the administration is no longer committed to a change in regime in Iraq? STEINBERG: Let me say a couple of things. First, Ken Pollack will be coming as the Director in the -- I guess we call it the Near East and South Asia Directorate -- NESA. Ken is a very distinguished analyst of the region. He's worked the government before, he's worked in the NSC before. We're extremely excited to have him here. He's a powerful intellect and a guy who has tremendous knowledge of the region. I think, first, we very much encourage people, we bring people from both the inside and the outside to work at the NSC. We are not in a position of sort of censoring the writings that they do before or after they come in. The question is whether they have the kind of skills and background to help us do the work. The judgments about policy are the judgments that are ultimately made by the President and his foreign policy team. I also don't agree with your characterization of the particular article. I think the article analyzed some of the difficulties of the various strategies, but let me be perfectly clear that the policy that we have, which is that the only long-term solution to the threat posed by Saddam Hussein is a change of regime, is very much a commitment of this administration. We've been moving forward very aggressively -- the appointment of Frank Ricciardone is just one of the important elements of what we've been doing. We've been working very closely with the groups that are outside of Iraq; we are working closely with the governments in the region and others. And I have absolutely no doubt that Ken will be a terrific asset in helping us pursue that agenda. - Iraq News , by Laurie Mylroie, 17 March 1999, via http://www.fas.org/news/iraq/1999/03/990317_in.htm.

APRIL 9, 1999 : (NIGER : ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT MAINASSARA) The president of Niger, Ibrahim Bare Mainassara, has been shot dead in an apparent coup attempt. However, his death has been described as a "tragic accident" by the prime minister [Ibraim Assane Mayaki] of the west African state. But diplomats from Niger, based in the neighbouring country of Burkina Faso, said Mr Mainassara was ambushed and shot by mutinying troops as he tried to flee the country. The diplomats said they had been told by colleagues in Niger that the uprising began shortly after sunrise when soldiers swarmed on to the streets of the capital, Niamey. Troops with tanks are said to have blocked access to the presidential palace and other key locations.
In a radio broadcast Niger's Prime Minister, Ibraim Assane Mayaki , announced the country's parliament had been dissolved and that all political activity had been suspended. A government of national unity would be formed in a few days, Mr Mayaki added. It is still unclear whether forces loyal to the Mr Mayaki, were involved in the president's death.
There has been no explanation for Mr Mainassara's assassination but it follows opposition calls for him to resign after the annulment of regional elections held earlier this week. Mr Mainassara, a former army colonel, seized power in January 1996, ousting the country's first democratically elected president, Mahamane Ousmane. Mr Mainassara said he had staged the coup because Mr Ousmane had failed to address Niger's economic and political problems. Last year his government quashed several army uprisings and mutinies. The United Nations secretary-general, Kofi Annan, has reacted "with dismay" to the killing and called on Niger's leaders to work for "an early return to peace, stability and constitutional order". - "On this Day 9 April 1999: President of Niger 'killed in ambush,' BBC News

MAY 26, 1999 : (VA : UNKNOWN INDIVIDUAL IS SEEN VISITING TAIMA FAMILY)

MAY 28, 1999 : (VA : TAIMA FAMILY REPORTED MURDERED) Description: The suspect is believed to be a white male of Middle Eastern descent. He is described as being about fifty years of age or older, with black hair and brown eyes. He was reported to be clean-shaven at the time of the visit. He was driving a small white vehicle. Authorities believe the suspect may be in the Middle East. He should be considered armed and dangerous.
Case Details: On May 28, 1999, an anonymous caller summoned police to the home of the Taima family of McLean, Virginia. There they found Fuad Taima, his wife Dorothy, and their sixteen-year-old son, Leith, dead of multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. Fuad Taima, an Iraqi-American, was an international business consultant who founded the American Iraqi Foundation during the Gulf War in an effort to improve ties between the U.S. and Iraq. He cooperated closely with the Saddam Hussein regime. His assassin may have been someone known to him, since police found no sign of forcible entry into the Taima home. Police are looking for a suspect seen visiting the Taima family on the evening of May 26th.
Anyone with information concerning this suspect or the murders of Fuad, Dorothy, and Leith Taima, should contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Or call the Fairfax County Police, Homicide Unit, Detective Robert Murphy at 1-703-691-2131. Information may also be faxed to 703-273-8568. MAY 1999 : (MACLEAN, VA : MURDER OF IRAQI-AMERICAN BUSINESSMAN FAUD TAIMA, HIS WIFE AND 16 YEAR OLD SON - MURDER WOULD LATER BE ATTRIBUTED TO IRAQI INTELLIGENCE) At the 9/11 commission hearing today [July 9, 2003] , [National Defense University's Institute for National Strategic Studies] NDU's Judith Yaphe (who is not sympathetic to the idea that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 strikes) did, however, explain that Iraqi intelligence was behind the slaying of an Iraqi-American businessman, Fuad Taima, his wife and 16-year old son in May 1999 in their home in MacLean, Virginia. Those murders were carried out very professionally. Authorities never even named a suspect, let alone arrested one. Yaphe also said that Iraqi intelligence worked with Syria's Muslim Brotherhood in the late 1970s and early 1980s against the regime of Hafiz al-Assad. That, in fact, is fairly well known and is a demonstration that so-called "secular" regimes can and do work with Islamic militants. -- 5 posted on 07/09/2003 6:22 PM PDT by Badabing Badaboom

The letter itself is of extreme importance because of bin Laden's agreement with the Taliban. In accordance with that agreement, bin Laden is not to initiate anything, but as an emir, he is obliged by Islamic law to answer the demand of his disciples to lead them in a jihad if they so wish. So there is this greater justification for him to do something without violating his agreement with the Taliban....." ---NATIONAL PRESS CLUB 8/6/99 "...PRESS CONFERENCE NATIONAL PRESS CLUB MORNING NEWSMAKER WITH YOSSEF BODANSKY, AUTHOR; SUBJECT: INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM NATIONAL PRESS CLUB WASHINGTON, D.C. 10:00 A.M. JULY 29, 1999 : (AFTER UN TEAM DESTROYS VX SAMPLES, IT LEAVES IRAQ) BAGHDAD, July (Reuters) — A United Nations Disarmament team left Baghdad today after destroying a controversial UN laboratory which contained small samples of VX nerve gas and other toxic materials, eyewitnesses said. They said the team left their hotel in the Iraqi capital early this morning heading for Jordan on the 1,000-km desert highway between Baghdad and Amman. The UN disarmament experts had delayed their departure from Iraq for few days until the UN Security Council gave them the go-ahead to destroy seven vials of VX nerve gas which were a centre of row in the Council between Russia and other permanent members.
The destruction of the deadly VX took place yesterday. Russia, backed by China and France, suspected that the nerve gas may have been used in “foul play” by UN inspectors, such as contaminating Iraqi missile warhead fragments.
Last week the team of scientists found seven vials of diluted samples of VX, three of them opened. Each vial contained less than 0.1 milligrams of concentrated VX. Other toxic materials discovered by the team, including mustard gas and chemical standards, were destroyed and packed in concrete and sand to render them harmless last week.
The team, recruited for the UN by the Hague-based Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), came to Iraq to destroy materials left behind when UN weapons inspectors were evacuated hastily before US and British bombing raids on Iraq last December.
The materials belong to the UN Special Commission (UNSCOM) charged with dismantling Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction. - "UN team destroys nerve gas in Iraq," The Tribune, INDIA, Thursday, July 29, 1999, http://www.tribuneindia.com/1999/99jul29/world.htm#2

AUGUST 9, 1999 : (AL QAEDA MEMBER SAYS HE HAD BEEN TRAINED BY A NORTH KOREAN IN THE USE OF CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS) ISLAMABAD, Pakistan : "...One year after terrorist bombs ravaged its embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and killed 224 people, the United States is no closer to arresting the man it believes masterminded the attacks. Washington has put suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden on its 10 Most Wanted List, offered a $5 million reward for his arrest and tried to make international pariahs of his hosts, Afghanistan's Taliban rulers. The efforts have largely failed. Because of fresh but unspecified terrorist threats, the United States is closing embassies and halting its popular public tours of FBI headquarters in Washington......The Taliban, who control 90 percent of the country and preach probably the harshest brand of Islam operating in the world today, seem unlikely to give up a man extolled as a hero by radical Islamic groups. In July, however, the Taliban did end their pretense of not knowing where bin Laden was, acknowledging he still lived in Afghanistan and still was a guest to be protected. They also denied reports he was planning to seek sanctuary in another Islamic country....``Bin laden is training his own people for terrorist activities around the world,'' said an Afghan who once trained with bin Laden at Tora Bora, also in eastern Afghanistan. ``They include Sudanese, Algerians, Tajiks, Iranians and Egyptians,'' he said. ``Osama has dozens of camps. They train on anti-aircraft guns, explosives, chemical and biological weapons.'' The same Afghan warrior, who didn't want to be identified because he feared for his life, said he had been trained to use chemical and biological weapons. The training was conducted by a North Korean. -- AP via Hot Daily News, 8/9/99 via ALAMO-GIRL'S DOWNSIDE LEGACY AT TWO DEGREES OF PRESIDENT CLINTON ; SECTION: BREACH OF TRUST; SUBSECTION: TERROR; Revised 1/8/01

AUGUST 1999 : (SEC OF STATE ALBRIGHT VOWS TO WAGE AN ALL-OUT WAR AGAINST TERRORISM; BUT CLINTON OFFERS TO COMMUTE THE SENTENCES OF 14 FALN TERRORISTS) "...Just last week, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, speaking on the first anniversary of the deadly U.S. embassy bombings in Africa, vowed to wage an all-out war against terrorism. This week, President Clinton turned that promise into a joke by offering to commute the justifiably harsh prison sentences of 14 FALN terrorists, including the wife of its bomb-maker mastermind, the notorious William Morales. The FALN, for those who may have forgotten, was a small group of separatists who launched a deadly "war of nerves" to bring about independence for Puerto Rico. Over a six-year period, the group claimed responsibility for more than 100 bombings that took six lives and injured some 130 people. AUGUST 27, 1999 : (TANZANIA HANDS 14 FOREIGNERS, INCLUDING FIVE IRAQIS, OVER TO IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES AFTER BOMBING INVESTIGATION) DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania - Tanzania has expelled 14 foreigners questioned in last month's bombing of the U.S. Embassy.Five Iraqis, five Sudanese, two Libyans, one Turk and another person whose nationality was not given were handed over by police to immigration authorities on Aug. 27 for expulsion, Immigration Department spokesman Herbert Chilambo said Thursday.''Lack of direct evidence to connect them to the bomb attack at the U.S. Embassy in the city was a major reason for their release,'' Chilambo said. He said the five Iraqis were sent to Iraq on Sept. 9 and 10, and three Sudanese, two Libyans, a Turk and the person of unidentified nationality were expelled Sept. 12. He said two Sudanese remained in his department's custody pending investigation to determine whether they will be deported as well. The Aug. 7 blast at the embassy in a residential neighborhood killed 11 people. In neighboring Kenya, an almost simultaneous explosion at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi killed 247 people, 12 of them Americans. Two men are in custody in the United States in connection with the murder of the 12 Americans in Nairobi, and a third is being sought. Adadi Rajabu, director of the police Criminal Investigations Division and head of the task force looking into the bombing, said police are still holding two principal suspects - a Tanzanian and a foreigner whose nationality he would not reveal. Rajabu said three other people, including the owner of a metal workshop where the explosive device reportedly was attached to a vehicle, were in detention and helping police with the investigation.- "Tanzania expels 14 in bombing probe," AP via USA Today, http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/bomb136.htm.

AUGUST 1999 late : (ITALIAN DIPLOMAT'S DAUGHTER, SILVIA BARALDINI, IS SENT TO SERVE HER REMAINING SENTENCE IN ITALY - WAS THE CLINTON ADMIN TRYING TO PLACATE THE ITALIAN LEFTWING GOVERNMENT? - see FALN) "...Maybe the White House is telling the truth, after all. Maybe President Clinton's clemency offer to 16 FALN terrorists really wasn't motivated by his wife's Senate campaign. The evidence: The Clinton administration is acting as though it believes that violent terrorists just don't belong in U.S. prisons. Two weeks ago, to scant public notice, the Justice Department opened the prison gates to violent radical Silvia Baraldini. An Italian diplomat's daughter, she was sentenced to 40 years in prison in connection with several robberies carried out by black militants - including the 1981 Brink's armored-care holdup in Nyack, in which two cops and a security guard were murdered. Baraldini also has been linked to the jail break in which Joanne Chesimard - now living in Cuba - fled a New Jersey prison. And she was sentenced to an additional three years in a separate case for criminal contempt after she refused to testify before a grand jury investigating the FALN. Over the past decade, the Justice Department - citing the violent nature of her crimes - had rejected five requests by the Italian government to let Baraldini serve the remainder of her sentence in a Rome prison. This year, however, the request was granted. Why? Because the Clinton administration felt it needed to make a conciliatory gesture in order to placate Italy's left-wing government, which was angered by the bizarre acquittal last spring of U.S. Marine pilot Richard Ashby, whose low-flying plane sliced a gondola cable in the Alps, killing 20 people...." -- New York Post 9/8/99 Editorial via ALAMO-GIRL'S DOWNSIDE LEGACY AT TWO DEGREES OF PRESIDENT CLINTON ; SECTION: BREACH OF TRUST; SUBSECTION: TERROR; Revised 1/8/01

The truth will set you free! I point you to the WashPo story from Dec 26, 2003 that says the CIA is upset with me for talking about a document they say is a forgery (when they are not denying that it exists) that details EXACTLY what the Senate Intel Committee says.

Plame got him the job and the White House didn't know they were sending him - otherwise they would have nixed it knowing that Wilson was anti-war.

The sweet taste of vindication.

Plame was not the person who made the decision to send him. Of her memo, he said: "I don't see it as a recommendation to send me."

I was expecting him to deny the existence of the memo. Now, he essentially confirms it. His explanation, however, is idiotic. Why would she have mentioned Wilson if not to recommend him?

This is exactly like Sidney Blumenthal coming out of the grand jury when he testified for Starr and lying by saying all they asked was about Clinton's sex life. He lied because he didn't think he would get caught. Same with Wilson.

Thanks for your reply. I hope you are organized for your (and for every American you know) absentee ballot for November. The dems have serious overseas organizations for getting out the vote.

Your suggestions are worthy of sending to the Bush/Cheney'04 website. Are you on their mailing list?
BushCheney04@GeorgeWBush.com

As you said (I think it was you), we spend a lot of time speaking to the choir here on FR, which is great - knowing that we are not alone in our opinions. However, we have to spread the word beyond this forum ourselves. We have to help President Bush get around the major partisan media. He cannot force them to convey his words, plans or principles.

I phone talk shows and write to newspapers constantly. I wear a "W" button or a "Bush/Cheney" button and speak to anyone who comments on them. I live in a city that is 2/3 black, and tell every black person that I meet that President Bush is a good man who has the same kind of good values, respect for the family, and for the dignity of everyone, that they have; that he is the best choice for ALL Americans.

I respectfully suggest you should re-study the principles and premises of free trade, and reconsider what you think to be the better approach. Free trade is simply the government stepping out of the way (as much as it ever does) so that individuals may choose to deal with whomever they choose. Any other approach involves the government stepping in to collect a tax on goods or services your neighbor needs so you can sell something at a higher price. As with the steel tariffs recently imposed and then terminated, the tariffs destroyed more jobs in the U.S. than were saved, and the jobs saved cost far more than they were reasonably worth. The U.S. caused the Crash of 1929 and the collapse of world trade by voting to abandon free trade in the U.S. Senate in October, 1929, a historic error that contributed greatly to bringing on WWII. We must not make the same mistake again.

What a great revelation to wake up to.

Now, we all surmised this was the case (using our skills of logic and reason) and the reason reporters like Cliff May said they were told *by sources friendly to Wilson--not anyone out to harm him or his lovely bride*--that Wilson had gone to Niger at the suggestion of his wife, was to explain and justify it. Wilson being an outright political antagonist of the administration, the trip is highly suspicious.

I've often said I would think the grand jury is looking into why the CIA was employing these shenanigans (or worse--probably worse), not the idiotic Wilson claim that the WH "outed" Valerie. If the Senate report was able to establish she recommended him, then it goes to reason the grand jury has, too. So then the question is why---and why his "findings" were misrepresented not only by himself, but an anonymous "CIA official" in newspaper reports that sought to undermine this administration and President Bush in particular.

In other words, this whole Joe Wilson thing was completely manufactured by Democrat-affiliated political hacks for purely partisan purposes.

Something which has been obvious since day one. That and the media's willingness (in this and other stories) to purvey partisan lies in an effort to bring down President Bush or anyone in this administration (see Chris Matthews spitting out "Scooter Libby" like a turret's syndrome victim), and shun the facts on the record.

The only bright light is that eventually the media types are forced by sheer force of data and documentation to acknowledge and concede certain facts--well after they've lent credence and authority to liars and pond scum like Joe Wilson.

Ah, Fox news just promoted what stories will be covered this hour and this will be discussed shortly. Good.

This story in today's Washington Post seems to indicate that Joe Wilson is a monumental liar, publicity hound and partisan hack. Truly a must-read. Spread the word.

Thanks! No doubt about it .....

Joseph C. Wilson IV has denied his wife's input.

Wilson last year launched a public firestorm with his accusations that the administration had manipulated intelligence to build a case for war. He has said that his trip to Niger should have laid to rest any notion that Iraq sought uranium there and has said his findings were ignored by the White House.

Wilson's assertions -- both about what he found in Niger and what the Bush administration did with the information -- were undermined yesterday in a bipartisan Senate intelligence committee report.

The panel found that Wilson's report, rather than debunking intelligence about purported uranium sales to Iraq, as he has said, bolstered the case for most intelligence analysts. And contrary to Wilson's assertions and even the government's previous statements, the CIA did not tell the White House it had qualms about the reliability of the Africa intelligence that made its way into 16 fateful words in President Bush's January 2003 State of the Union address.

Remember that when Bush hired a lawyer for this "Plame" investigation all the MSM's breathlessly reported it every five minutes. Have we seen this "Plame recommended husband) as breathlessly? I don't know how we can get the news out truthfully. WaPo only put it on A09 -- this should have been FRONT PAGE NEWS everywhere.

There are an infinite number of ways to lie and only one way to tell the truth -- and believe me the MSM will somehow spin this news as well.

You're right about Susan Schmidt. But many of her stories make the front page, and this one didn't. Take a look at this:

The panel found that the CIA has not fully investigated possible efforts by Iraq to buy uranium in Niger to this day, citing reports from a foreign service and the U.S. Navy about uranium from Niger destined for Iraq and stored in a warehouse in Benin.

The agency did not examine forged documents that have been widely cited as a reason to dismiss the purported effort by Iraq until months after it obtained them. The panel said it still has "not published an assessment to clarify or correct its position on whether or not Iraq was trying to purchase uranium from Africa."

Now here is the question: Did the CIA bureaucracy refrain from following up on the yellow-cake investigation so as not to help the Bush administration to support the war against Iraq? What other reason is there to avoid checking out the facts behind Iraq's efforts to purchase uranium? Especially after Libya/Kadaffi turned over all the evidence of its nuclear programs (reportedly conducted in league with Iran, North Korea and IRAQ)! Seems to me, those in the CIA behind all this, including the investigation of the "outing" of Plame were motivated by anti-Bush politics. Any thoughts, anyone?

If I'm understanding this right, Tenet went to his analysts, told them he had an important job regarding critical intelligence that needed to be checked out and asked if any of them had any spouses completely lacking in espionage or investigative experience who might be up to the job. And that's how Wilson got the job.

He did not. He said the group sent Wilson on *their own initiative*, further he basically said the trip was a worthless venture.

Text of CIA Director George Tenet's statement

excerpt:

There was fragmentary intelligence gathered in late 2001 and early 2002 on the allegations of Saddam's efforts to obtain additional raw uranium from Africa, beyond the 550 metric tons already in Iraq. In an effort to inquire about certain reports involving Niger, CIA's counter-proliferation experts, on their own initiative, asked an individual with ties to the region to make a visit to see what he could learn. He reported back to us that one of the former Nigerien (sic) officials he met stated that he was unaware of any contract being signed between Niger and rogue states for the sale of uranium during his tenure in office. The same former official also said that in June 1999 a businessman approached him and insisted that the former official meet with an Iraqi delegation to discuss "expanding commercial relations" between Iraq and Niger. The former official interpreted the overture as an attempt to discuss uranium sales. The former officials also offered details regarding Niger's processes for monitoring and transporting uranium that suggested it would be very unlikely that material could be illicitly diverted. There was no mention in the report of forged documents -- or any suggestion of the existence of documents at all.

Because this report, in our view, did not resolve whether Iraq was or was not seeking uranium from abroad, it was given a normal and wide distribution, but we did not brief it to the President, Vice-President or other senior Administration officials. We also had to consider that the former Nigerien officials knew that what they were saying would reach the U.S. government and that this might have influenced what they said.

~snip~

But it freaks me out that there might still be analysts and operatives in the CIA as feckless as this woman was to suggest her husband.

Me, too. The woman's husband was writing columns for "The Nation", for crying out loud, spreading lies and disinformation far and wide, and now what we deduced as been proven--that she suggested him--certainly does cast suspicion on her motives. I think the grand jury is investigating this. It is very delicate and these people are ruthless. The media demonstrated which side they would support, so getting the ducks in a row and proving what they were doing beyond a reasonable doubt is absolutely necessary. I would like to see it move along, but I think this documentation is a huge step forward.

I'm shocked, shocked!(NOT)..I don't like it that the CIA never really investigated the documents referred to,though.

I guess I better go read the whole article---but before I do I'll just note that the documents (the forged ones, I take it) had nothing to do with Wilson or his trip. The CIA got them in February 2003, I think (a year after the trip) and turned them over to the UN.

I'll go read what the report says...

The story of the senate intellegence panels findings did start on the front page. It is not at all uncommon for a front page story to spawn other stories on the inside page where the front page story is continued, as is the case today with Sue Schmidt's article. Effectively, her's is a continuation of the front page story.

I am so glad I read the whole article. It is very interesting:

The report said Plame told committee staffers that she relayed the CIA's request to her husband, saying, "there's this crazy report" about a purported deal for Niger to sell uranium to Iraq. The committee found Wilson had made an earlier trip to Niger in 1999 for the CIA, also at his wife's suggestion.

The report also said Wilson provided misleading information to The Washington Post last June. He said then that he concluded the Niger intelligence was based on documents that had clearly been forged because "the dates were wrong and the names were wrong."

"Committee staff asked how the former ambassador could have come to the conclusion that the 'dates were wrong and the names were wrong' when he had never seen the CIA reports and had no knowledge of what names and dates were in the reports," the Senate panel said. Wilson told the panel he may have been confused and may have "misspoken" to reporters. The documents -- purported sales agreements between Niger and Iraq -- were not in U.S. hands until eight months after Wilson made his trip to Niger.

~snip~

Well, Plame exposes herself right off the bat by betraying that the report on seeking uranium from Niger is "crazy". This again buttresses my suspicion that it is she who was the anonymous "CIA official" that peddled the Wilson version of the story to foreign press like the BBC.

We've been pointing out since he said it that Wilson was lying about the forged documents havig anything to do with him. The media would and should have seen it, too, if they weren't in the business of printing democratic talking points straight from the fax machine to the front page (incidentally, I see this landed on page 9 of today's least read day of the week issue--though in fairness to the day of the week, the report was just issued yesterday).

I say again, I hope to see both of these appalling people "frogmarched" (to coin Wilson's charming term) off to prison someday. I really do.

The CIA also made only ''halfhearted'' attempts to investigate a West African businessman's claim that Nigerien uranium bound for Iraq was being stored in a warehouse in the nearby African nation of Benin, the report said. The CIA never contacted the businessman, even though the U.S. Navy gave the CIA his phone number, the report said.

Plame, Wilson and Novak are traitors.

Why Novak?

Believe me, I have my issues on his reports, but not on this matter.

Wilson was recommendedby his wife to be sent. Wilson is an extreme leftist who vehemently opposes the administration. His trip was suspect for that reason and all Novak did was include the (now documented and proven) fact way down in his column that the reason Wilson went to Niger was because his wife recommended him. Something Wilson then denied--lying about it. Just as he is lying about everyting else, like his charge that the "WH" was behind "outing" his idiot of a wife, when he knows damn well it was his friends (if not himself and his wife) who were telling reporters in an effort to justify his trip.

Speaking of Benin again:

The Iraqi official who visited the African state in 1999 was Wissam al-Zahawie, who at the time was Iraq's ambassador to the Vatican. It has since emerged that, during the same visit, al-Zahawie also visited three other African countries: Burkina Faso, Benin and Congo-Brazzaville. He has claimed that the sole purpose of these visits was to extend an invitation from Saddam Hussein for their heads of state to visit Baghdad. He said: 'My only mission was to meet the President of Niger and invite him to visit Iraq. The invitation, and the situation in Iraq resulting from the genocidal UN sanctions, were all we talked about. I had no other instructions, and certainly none concerning the purchase of uranium.'
Former US diplomat Joseph Wilson, who visited Niger in 2002 on behalf of the CIA to probe a possible uranium link with Iraq, said al-Zahawie's visit was common knowledge.
'It's perfectly reasonable to assume that the Iraqis weren't interested in Niger's millet or sorghum, but it's a real leap of faith to say that, through this visit, Iraq was seeking to purchase significant quantities of uranium from Niger,' Wilson said. 'It's not even circumstantial evidence.'
Al-Zahawie's name also appears as a signatory of documents addressed to Niger diplomats in Rome, confirming a deal whereby Iraq would purchase 500 tons of uranium 'yellow cake' ore. These documents have proved to be forgeries and accepted as fakes by Washington and the IAEA.

Wissam al Zahawie was Iraq's ambassador to the Vatican. Note also that just after his trip to Niger, Father Benjamin, a far-left French activist priest at the Vatican, began his flights of sanctions-busting 'aid' to Iraq. Zahawie attended his movie screenings- like Scott Ritter and Michael Moore, Father Benjamin was into 'documentary' making.

SEPTEMBER 2000 : (SANCTIONS-BREAKERS : FATHER JEAN-MARIE BENJAMIN, FRENCH CITIZENS TRIP TO IRAQ) A diplomatic row has blown up at the United Nations over a direct flight between Paris and Baghdad. [The flight is to] to fight against an intolerable situation which condemns an innocent population to a slow agony. Flight organiser Father Jean-Marie Benjamin
About 80 French doctors, artists and sports personalities are planning to leave for Baghdad at 0800 (0600 GMT) on Friday to provide medical assistance and take part in a cultural festival.
Britain and the United States say that the French are violating UN sanctions against Iraq by not giving enough notice of the flight. However, France maintains that it is not trying to erode sanctions, but merely interpreting UN resolutions in a more liberal way than Washington and London.
The flight has been arranged by a private French group opposed to the international sanctions imposed after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. A second French group has announced plans for another flight on 29 September. Its organiser, Father Jean-Marie Benjamin, said it was "to fight against an intolerable situation which condemns an innocent population to a slow agony".
Last week Russia flew a passenger flight to Iraq carrying humanitarian aid and a number of oil executives. But it gave the UN sanctions committee a few day's notice, enabling other countries to decide whether they wanted to raise any objections. Objections However, this time, France gave the committee only a few hours' notice, arguing that it did not need the UN's approval as the flight is not commercial. Britain has formally objected to the flight, saying that it breaks the sanctions. "We objected. We don't think it is humanitarian," a British diplomat said.
US officials said they were still reviewing the situation, although they had raised similar concerns earlier in the day.
The Netherlands, which chairs the committee on the Iraqi sanctions, has asked France to delay the flight's departure.
Both France and Russia, close trading partners of Iraq before the invasion of Kuwait, want the sanctions eased and lifted.
The BBC's United Nations correspondent says the row over flights raises questions about the future of the sanctions now that such prominent countries appear increasingly willing to test the embargo's limits.
Iraq re-opened its international airport last month to enable it to receive international flights against, despite the sanctions.
In a separate development, Russia, France and Tunisia have proposed a reduction of the amount of compensation Iraq pays to Gulf war victims from 30% to 20% in order to allow more funds for humanitarian goods. The proposal comes as the UN Security Council discusses the latest UN report on the oil-for-food programme that allows Iraq to buy humanitarian goods to counter the effect of sanctions. - " French defiant on flight to Iraq," BBC, Friday, 22 September, 2000, 02:12 GMT 03:12 UK

************************************

Father Benjamin is also noted for his claim that he heard about 9/11 in advance, while attending a wedding in Italy. HE claims he told authorities about what he heard, claims he knew an attack on the UK was aborted at the last minute, etc. Weddings, Iraq, al Qaeda, Italy and 9/11 seem to go together...

I wonder just what or who was on those flights in the summer of 2000?
