WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) wants to return to the moon and put a man on Mars. But scientist Bradley C. Edwards has an idea that's really out of this world: an elevator that climbs 62,000 miles into space.

I think 15 years is overly optimistic but it's one for todays toddlers to look at as they grow up.

Hmm...24,000 miles high. How fast does the elevator climb it? At 200 miles/hour, it takes 120 hours to reach the top - you can't support a humn for 5 days with 13 tons.

I guess you just go 100 miles up and transfer to a space ship there. Makes you wonder how much of this Tsiokolsky figured out.

How much DO you eat? I'm sure glad I'm not paying your grocery bill!

Interesting idea, but seems to lack practicality unless, at the top of the "elevator" is a spaceship that has been prepared for deep space exploration. Besides, with any structure like that today, we have to consider the potential for terrorism. What happens if terrorists destroy the "cable" where it attaches to the earth?

I find the current trend toward teleportation to be more exciting and of more use once it is perfected.
