Riddled with bullets, BBC correspondent Frank Gardner pleaded for his life in the Saudi capital shouting to bystanders to help a fellow Muslim, a police officer told AFP yesterday.
"I'm a Muslim, help me, I'm a Muslim, help me," the British father of two daughters cried in Arabic, the officer said.
Gardner was stretched on the road, covered in blood from multiple bullet wounds in a slum area of southern Riyadh known as a hotbed of hardliners.
A fluent Arabic speaker with a degree in Arab and Islamic Studies, he was carrying a small copy of the Koran, the Muslim holy book, a device used by Westerner reporters to try to reassure Islamist militants.
He was gravely wounded and his Irish cameraman Simon Cumbers killed Sunday evening as they filmed near the home of Ibrahim al-Rayyes, a wanted terror suspect killed in a clash with security forces in the area last December.
Gardner was in a coma yesterday at King Faisal Specialist Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

The 42-year-old was hit by many bullets to the stomach and feet and transferred to the capital's Al-Iman Hospital.
Saudi newspapers reported that the gunmen had left him for dead.
"Frank is in a critical but stable condition in intensive care after surgery," a British embassy spokesperson told AFP earlier yesterday.

Here is is delivering the news... Naww, just kidding.
In all seriousness, this is sad, and I feel awful for this guy and his family. Pretty disgusting that to get help one needs to proclaim ones muslimality.

Either way, what does it tell us that a man riddled with bullets would need to claim his "Islamicity" in order to be helped by random bystanders?
Yep... one's religion shouldn't make a squat's worth of difference if they are hurt or suffering.... at least to civilized people.

Kevlar book-cover wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

The very fact that he uttered those words show that he knows that Muslims want to kill non-Muslims.
Sickening.

Some muslim this guy is, aren't they supposed to "love death as much as the infidel loves life"? He should've been jumping for joy.
I wonder if the BBC will protest the coincidence that a camera crew just happened to be there to catch it. That would be some lovely irony.

I'm re-al sorry. I shouldn't post this. I should feel bad for the guy. But the situation just demands it:

I also can't help being reminded of what Nick Berg's father said about his killers: "They had no idea they were killing the best friend they ever had."

I like the concept of "Saudi gunmen." They were actually the Saudi counterpart of the students at Berkeley who are the children of wealthy professionals. The Saudi gunmen who got away so often and so easily are most certainly young idealists, related to Saudi royalty. They are above the Saudi criminal system and can do pretty much what they like. Some Saudi princes may be able to control them but not the Saudi police or military.
More important here, however, is how they boke the code and discovered that the BBC reporter, like so many BBC and Reuters reporters in the Middle East, was an agent of some Israeli intelligence service. Sure, they write with a constant anti-American and anti-Israeli bias but that is just for cover. Any one know how the Saudi princes to be broke the cover of these reporters?

Sad situation here!
However, how many Freepers would have have helped this injured man? Bet it would have been a greater number than the muslims in his immediate area.
I know if our soldiers were in the area, they would have risked life and limb to help! This fact alone should shame anyone of islamic faith.

What a shame. I must mourn for awhile. Well that was long enough.
Great...now everyone in my cubicle farm is wondering why I was just laughing like a moron and now cleaning Pepsi off of my keyboard.
To: Eurotwit
how sad...people must have left him there not knowing he's a muslim and I believe it's against koranic law not to aide a fellow muslim.
