I think that some people are very used to taking care of themselves. By providing (paying) for their own needs, they are taking care of themselves.
I was on bedrest for 2 months while I was pregnant with twins. I was in the hospital for a week, and then I went home and was totally dependent on my husband. When I was in the hospital, I didn't mind asking for help going to the bathroom or getting something to drink or eat. That was their job. At home, I hated burdening my husband with any of my requests. It was really hard on him taking care of me, and I only really needed food and drinks. I think it would be more difficult taking care of an elderly person.
Your parents seem like they love you a lot, and I think it was a wonderful gesture on their part.
One thing you really notice about Japanese manga (comic books) for girls is that they're saturated with romance stories. It's as if Japanese girls & young women are desperate for it, and find it only in the fantasy of these "soft-core" shoujo manga. Meanwhile, the "boy manga" (shonen) are saturated with babes, boobs, mechas, alienated biker-type guys. Talk about men from Mars & women from Venus.
I've seen one demographic study that says if current trends continue, there will only be 100 Italians, Japanese and Spaniards in 250 years.
Re your post #62 - LOL...maybe you've got something there. Though I still think the same problem confronts some American men.
