Tuesday, June 1, 2004Czechs Need a Name for Their Nation
Ever since Czechoslovakia splintered into Slovakia and the Czech Republic, people in Prague have been puzzling over what to call their country.
Czech Republic is too long, folks fret. Some businessmen stamp "Made in Czech" on their goods, but "this is the grammatical equivalent of 'Made in British'," the Economist notes.
Some officials are pushing "Czechia," but many citizens don't like the sound. "Cesko," pronounced chess-go, is gaining popularity inside the republic, but former prez Vaclav Hazel complained it made his "flesh creep."

"Some officials are pushing "Czechia," "
That's what the Russians call them.
Couldn't they call themselves 'Bohemia'?

They could have a nation naming contest, or better yet, just sell the rights like a football stadium.
How about Volvo Land or Coca Cola Country?

There's a Letterman Top Ten List in here somewhere. "Top Ten Rejected Names for the Czech Republic."
10. Billy
9. Ghoti
8. Nixonia
etc.

Couldn't they call themselves 'Bohemia'?The trouble with that is that the current country consists not only of Bohemia but also of Moravia and part of Silesia.
BohMorSil? SilMoBo? MorBoSil?
All joking aside: naming the current country just "Bohemia" woudln't sit well with the Moravian and Silesian contingents.
