WASHINGTON, June 1, 2004 – The interim government that will run Iraq after the June 30 transfer of sovereignty took shape today, as U.N. officials in Baghdad announced the members of the government's presidential council and recommended the composition of a new cabinet to the country's prime minister-designate.

Lakhdar Brahimi, special envoy for U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, announced that Ghazi al-Yawar will be Iraq's president, and that Ibrahim Jaafari and Rowsch Shaways will serve as deputy presidents.

Brahimi also announced today that on May 31 he forwarded his recommendations for the composition of the new Iraqi cabinet to Prime Minister-designate Ayad Allawi. News reports indicated names of other new cabinet members and that the existing governing council had dissolved itself.

A written statement by Brahimi said Adnan Pachachi was offered the presidency, but declined it for personal reasons. Pachachi enjoys "wide respect and support in Iraq," and he had the support of Yawar, Allawi and Coalition Provisional Authority administrator Ambassador L. Paul Bremer III, the statement said.

Brahimi's statement said consultations in forming the interim Iraqi government have been going on without interruption for the last four weeks. "These consultations have involved the (Iraqi) Governing Council, the Coalition Provisional Authority, and a very large number of representatives of the Iraqi public, including political parties, professional associations, trade unions, tribal and religious leaders, academics and intellectuals, women's and youth organizations, and others," the statement said.

Question - Why haven't we likened the Iraqi transition to democracy to the post-war trasitions in Germany and Japan? Is it just more media left-wing bias (i.e., avoid saying/doing anything that might reflect positively on Bush) or is it simply not analagous?

When did the Iraqi oil money for UN thief Brahimi again begin to flow into his personal accounts? Did he, in fact, ever actually miss a payment? How can the US allow a slimey thief like Brahimi to take any leadership role after he opposed us just to protect his cut of the loot?

God bless our troops for removing Saddam when the Iraqis tried and failed and died by the thousands attempting to do so for decades.

God bless our troops for making it possible for the UN rep to negotiate a representative government within a now free Iraq, after our troops toppled Saddam and removed thousands of neighborhood thugs, and our troops, civil affair workers, civilian and coalition and native Iraqi allies across Iraq worked to set up neighborhood advisory councils, and win the trust and teach local Iraqis about representative government and free elections.

God bless our troops for paying the price in blood, sweat and tears for the freedom of others, even when their glory is stolen by others who live by lesser ideals, for lower worldly standards of vanity - power, greed, fame.

It is a good day for freedom, and for the Iraqi people.

Good questions. Keep asking, and putting out the truth.

Please, Brahimi's our guy, picked by Bush to put this govt together. Which he's done. Brahimi and the subsequent UN resolution will now impart an air of legitimacy to the govt and the US military presence there.

And to get the French on our side in the UN, we gave up Chalabi who had the dirt on the Oil for Food scandal.

Hopefully, the Baathis will now take on the jihadis in the ruthless manner for which they are known/
