Susanville's Muslim cleric condems Berg beheading

"It was absolutely outrageous; it agonized me," Muslim cleric and Susanville resident Salem Mohamed said of the video-taped beheading of American Nicholas Berg, whose body was found by U.S troops May 8 in Baghdad.

The men in the video said Berg's killing was retaliation for the abuse of prisoners by U.S. troops at Abu Ghraib prison. The CIA later reportedly confirmed the assassin was Abu Musa'b al-Zarqawi, who is associated with the Al-Qaida terrorist movement.

"I don't know if they are even Muslims," said Mohamed, speaking as a private citizen and not as a representative of High Desert State Prison or the California Correctional Center, where he serves as chaplain to about 200 Muslim inmates.

"I spoke with some of (the Muslim inmates) who clearly also expressed their outrage at this," he said.

Mohamed said he knows of only one other Muslim in Lassen County who is not incarcerated, a student at the Lassen College who is from the former Soviet Union states.

Mohamed said the Muslim Holy Book, the Koran, condemns such violence and he is outraged by it.

"I grew up living this religion," said the soft-spoken, bearded chaplain. "Among the sources of my joy is the mercy and compassion of this religion."

I grew up near Susanville, and I'm surprised there is any muslim there, in jail or not.

The times, they're a changin'.

Well, that explains it. I saw the headline and said to myself, "Muslims? In Susanville?" I didn't think that there would be enough moose limbs in Susanville to warrant a moose limb cleric. I had forgotten about the prison there.

Take it one tiny step further, Mohamed. None of the terrorists are Moslim, even though they claim to be. They have hijacked the religion.

Thanks for the post and i'd like to ping this as evidence that some people on here who complain about Moderates not condemning Radical Islamist, also complain when they do condemn the radical Islamists.

Thanks again.

Denial IS a river in Egypt, and the first refuge of liars. Typical schtick for muslims, they are consistantly vile and illogical. This kind of circular dialectic ends at the truth, read the book and see that they were doing the will of that twisted devil allah; this guy is the apostate in search of a fatwa.

Now Now, as all REAL Freepers know there is no such thing as a moderate Muslim. It's a catch-22 kind of thing.

I'd heard it that a moderate Muslim was one who held a grudge for only seven generations. Thanks for setting me straight on that one!

I grew up near there too, and have lived in several No. Cal. towns. Yes, the times are a changin', Redding has a large muslim poplulation, most of the small businesses in ALL the no. Cal. towns are owned by them, Marysville might as well be renamed "muslimville". I don't live there any more, but do visit there twice a year, still have family in the area.

Every time I return to California to visit relatives I recognize it less and less. I suppose that would be true for most areas in the country, but the changes in California have not been good for the most part.

I can only imagine how it will be in 20 years.

Change is never good. Usually. There are exceptions, but I can't think of any right now.
