Another good reason to boycott this movie among others.

Let's go to the movies sometime... I mostly agree with you, except for the nudity part of the male and female stars... Reverse it, and we'd be OK (lol). However, I'd be willing to put up with some male nudity for some female nudity in return... Well, okay (she says grudgingly). You can see Gwyneth Paltrow naked. That's not too thrilling. I'll trade you Gwyneth for Mel, but ONLY if he's been working out a lot lately. Deal?

Deal?Sorry, the two simply aren't in the same class! For Gweneth Paltrow, I'll trade you seeing Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) nude... Now, I'm not making a really bad joke here. For what it's worth, I'm actually a big fan of his work... The original PeeWee show was a hoot, and his Saturday morning show was terrific. And FWIW, I think that PeeWee's Big Adventure is a classic!

>They all blamed the whole mess on the gods
I've always hated
Greek myths, so I've never learned
many details, but
I got curious
reading your post. I never
knew Helen had such
a complicated
background and elaborate
story around her.
I'd have made the film
about her, and done the war
as just one section.

"...Helen, the face that launched a thousand ships, was a tantalizing enigma from the very first. She was flesh and blood certainly, but she was also immortal, since her father was none other than Zeus. Her mother was the beautiful Leda, queen of Sparta, who was ravished by the father of the gods in the form of a swan. Leda's husband was Tyndarecus, who later the same night, unaware of his feathered predecessor, also impregnated his wife. She produced two eggs, one of which yielded Helen and Polydeuces and the other of which contained Castor and Clytemnestra. ...
"... Armies were recruited and ships were built. Men who had been boys when Helen married came forward to enlist in a cause that the gods transported her to Elysium. This was the most fitting end of the story since Helen was, after all, immortal. Consequently, Menelaus could scarcely have carried out his intention of killing her when he was reunited with her at Troy. Immortal or not, her physical remains and those of Menelaus were supposed to be buried at Therapne in a temple dedicated to them. Writers even followed her into the afterworld, where they had her marry Achilles, making him her fifth husband, following Theseus, Menelaus, Paris, and Deiphobus. From there she was even said to have blinded the poet Stesichorus for writing unflattering things about her; she restored his vision when he recanted and composed a poem in her praise.
"The most fascinating thing about Helen was her story. It was far better than she was. ..." |

You are, of course, correct. Perhaps I was confusing it with some other non-PC Greek story. :)

Helen is a very interesting character. You can view her as a hapless pawn of fate (or of the gods), or as a person who made conscious decisions that produced some astounding results. In the later case, then maybe she was well-intentioned but clueless, or maybe she was ruthless and manipulative.
How a person chooses to view Helen tells something about the author (reader, film-maker), but not much about the mytho-historical person herself!

> Wolfgang Peterson, Son of a
Nazi, and just another bitter German
Since I read this post,
I've tried to remember what
else was Nazi here . . .
It just came to me.
Brad Pitt [!] turned a Nazi guy
into a "hero"
a few years ago
in "Seven Years in Tibet"
The Left loves power . . .

"If it hadn't been for Brad Pitt signing on to play the lead role of obsessive Austrian mountain climber Heinrich Harrer, there's a good chance this lavish $70 million film would not have been made. ... But with Pitt onboard, this adaptation of Harrer's acclaimed book focuses more on Harrer, a Nazi party member whose life was changed by his experiences in Tibet with the Dalai Lama. Having survived a treacherous climb on the challenging peak of Nanga Parbat and a stint in a British POW camp, Harrer and climbing guide Peter Aufschnaiter (nicely played by David Thewlis) arrive at the Tibetan city of Lhasa, where the 14-year-old Dalai Lama lives as ruler of Tibet. Their stay is longer than either could have expected (the "seven years" of the title), and their lives are forever transformed by their proximity to the Tibetan leader .... --Jeff Shannon " |

Uh-oh. I'm told I bear a strong resemblance to Gwyneth, who is universally derided on this forum. Guess you wouldn't be interested in a trip to the movies with me, then, no matter how many things blow up in the flick!

Guess you wouldn't be interested in a trip to the movies with me, then, no matter how many things blow up in the flick! Not at all! We were talking about physical attributes only... My problem with Gwenyth is based on a few of her roles that I saw and didn't care for, and frankly, if I were making a list of movie stars that I could see "nekkid" based only on physical attributes, she just wouldn't be first on my list. That has nothing to do with attraction, or who I would choose as a "movie pal."
On the other hand, you might decide to withdraw your offer... I've been told that I bear a strong physical resemblance to Sasquatch (although I do bathe every day, so I don't carry the "stink-ape" aroma!)

Do what the liberals did with Gibson's film.
Go to the 12 theatre complex, pay for a family film, then go see 'Troy'.
This way, you can see the movie without your money supporting the socialists.
To: ThreeYearLurker
The movie isn't called "The Iliad" it is called "Troy" so it isn't really a stretch at all.
To: jonboy
Wow, I really just don't care. I don't ask the guy who makes my cheeseburger at McDonalds what he thinks of the Iraq war, and if I saw him on TV complaining at Bush I wouldn't stop eating there. If we would stop caring about celebrities' political opinions and just treat them as what they are, actors paid to do a job, then life would be much easier. Wolfgang Peterson is the guy who directed Troy. Having seen it tonight, I can say it is moderatly good. That is all he is to me, and I really don't care about his political opinions unless he runs for office or does something else that actually has the potential to influence American policy.
