At his age, he needs to know what is going on in the world, but the continual litany of sorrow and fear that is now part of the very fabric of our daily lives is almost too much to bear. The big lummox doesn't look like he's overcome with sorrow and fear.

So many good posts here. Yours stands out because I'm doing the same with my sons. I make them watch the videos so they never forget...Mr Pearl...never forget...9/11 never forget.
At 11 and 7, they know more about the world today, and even WWII by watching the entire Band of Brothers than most HS seniors. They KNOW what their freedom cost and what it will cost to KEEP it!
I called every service in the military after 9/11 to volunteer and I was too damned old (45). They got a kick out of it and thanked me but no dice. I'd gladly fight and die so my sons don't have to. Isn't that what Jesus did...give up his life to save ours?
I am however ready here at home and locked and loaded for duty/ One more time...just one more time...and no more free ride for those who by their silence [muslims] cheer for the terrorists. God watch over our soldiers, our President and our country...and of course our children; and protect them from the evil that is attacking us physically and spiritually every day.

Well, if you voted for Carter and clinton, you SHOULD feel guilty, lady. This is all your fault....

Sorry, I understood it was recent, Mom, but maybe my post wasn't clear. Whenever he married her, I still think that any guy that married this quivering basket-case of a woman needs to have his head examined. Then again, maybe he's a mama's boy himself. You aren't gonna read too many thrilling adventure novels about headmasters-for-the-rich-and-dissolute.
It's true, men and women take different views of risk to the kids, but this gal puts the "s" in front of "mother." If she was my mom I'd run off join the circus, or Navy or Army or something. And not send her a Christmas card for two or three years. That'd fix her.

My son sits tensely on the couch watching the nightly television news while words are spoken that no 17-year-old child should hear: "You're a momma's boy, ya little fairy"

I read on her website that she'd only recently married the headmaster. Joe Cox, the Headmaster?

I just read the bio, and it seems really, really strange. I wonder what Cox's branch was in the Army. Gonna ask a few retired colonels and whatnot if any of them know him...

I've been widowed for six years and 3 months, and managed to avoid raising girly men.
Thank God.Sorry for your loss, Valerie, but glad to hear you have made men out of your boys.
The woman in this article will probably be shocked when Sonny Boy moves to San Francisco with his wife, Bill.

Yeah...one of greatest people I've ever met here on FR (met in RL, even) is a retired Marine. He's also a poet.
Not a judgement on the guy...just an observation.
The whole thing with this guy is puzzling...how could he marry such a flake???

What a poignant and touching drawing by your little man! We need more men to be raised like this!
My son (now 17!) had just celebrated his 15th birthday a couple days before Sep 11 and was home with a bronchial infection. He is not being raised like the young guy in the story either. I don't think any of us who can remember that day will ever forget. It's a strange week every year now, my son's birthday, a joyous occasion, followed by the solemn commemoration of Sep 11. My son stays home for that day, we commemorate, also. I hadn't considered visiting the local fire dept or armory as an option, what a great idea!
