Freaky. If I was an older woman in that area, or had a close family member that fit the profile, I'd be thinking hard of a way to install some sort of mechanism that would indicate--whether through an alarm, or something else--that the phone line has been cut. I have absolutely no idea if anything of this sort exists, though, but it sounds like something that could made.

whether through an alarm, or something else--that the phone line has been cut.May I introduce you to my Brinks alarm system? It was a standard feature. My phone line went dead due to a storm once, and the alarm went off inside. A cell phone would certainly be of use to alert the police.

My alarm system is triggered immediately when the phone line is cut. (Cutting my phone line is impossible without a blow torch, and a lot of patience, though.) Then there are still cell phones, the expected assortment of protection implements and the ultimate defense: The Dog.
