Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has thanked his wife for coaxing him to have cosmetic surgery.

He said the idea for his controversial eye enhancement came from Veronica.

But he was so delighted with the result that he planned more changes, he said at a meeting with fashion designers in the capital, Rome.

The 67-year-old prime minister sparked mass interest when appeared in public a week ago with a new look after disappearing for more than a month.

'Feeling fine'

The image-conscious politician looked younger and thinner and admitted to having cosmetic surgery around his eyes and going on a diet - all after persuasion from his wife.

"She convinced me to do it. Veronica is behind the whole thing," he said, adding that he was pleased with the outcome.

"I like the way I look. I feel fine. I look in the mirror and I like what I see and I think I am more pleasing to others too."

Mr Berlusconi denied having had surgery on other areas of his face but said that may yet come.

"I am not finished yet, as you can see."

At least he admitted to it, instead of expecting anyone to believe his wrinkles magically disappeared overnight. He sort of looks like F. Murray Abraham in the after photo.

Personal comments aside....Silvio seems to love life and has been a strong Allie

I have nothing against him (or Kerry, for that matter) having cosmetic surgery if that's what he wants. The only problems are:
1. Lying about it (a la Kerry).
2. Using taxpayer dollars to pay for it (or your current wife's money).
3. The Italian guy now looks like Vladimir Putin.

I have no problem with anyone having cosmetic surgery. Some of my friends are cosmetic surgeons. In some cases it does wonders and in other cases it is hideous (Michael Jackson and that cat woman come to mind), but it is still a personal decision. What irks me about Kerry is that: 1) he won't admit it when he clearly had injections for his wrinkles; and 2) it still amazes me how some people's opinions about a candidate are based on appearance.
