"In a basement dug into the sand . . . ."
General Sanchez called it a "spider hole." A very small dugout with a primitive ventilation system. As I recall from the press conference it was in a field close to a small farm house in a village near Tikrit. I'll guess that it was where Saddam spent his nights, and maybe used the farmhouse for other times.

There was a report earlier from Gen. Sanchez that said someone came in with a tip on his location. It was received at 10:50pm IST and the plan executed at 11:15pm IST.That's good too.
Some family member figured, "Cousin Saddam is gonna get lassooed sooner or later. Might as well cash in while he's still worth a few bucks." (Pointing at the dirt and whistling) "Hey GIs! Lookin' for a 200 pound rat? Dig here!"

I wonder what Katie Couric has to say... Saddam had cuts near his left eyebrow. These will form the basis of an upcoming lawsuit against the U.S. for 'military brutality'...ala Rodney King. Saddam will win this multi-million dollar lawsuit decided by the 9th Circus and settle in San Francisco....
