J-DAM sends strong message to insurgents
AR RAMADI, Iraq In the evening hours of November 10th the 3-505 Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) and 504th Military Police (MP) Company conducted a joint operation just east of Lutayfiyah, Iraq. The mission primarily consisted of an air strike aimed at destroying a known weapons storage location and meeting site for enemy personnel. The mission was conducted to deny the enemy the opportunity to coordinate future attacks.
Coalition Forces asked the residents of the rural area to temporarily vacate their homes so that the target could be safely destroyed. Two precision bombs later destroyed the house known for harboring combatants and storing ammunition used in the making of improvised explosive devices.
Major Steve Sears, Fire Support Officer for the 3rd Bde, 82nd Airborne Division stated, When noncompliant forces attack Coalition Forces, we will kill or capture them and will deny them sanctuary.
The destruction of the house was the result of an ongoing operation in response to recent ambushes on coalition forces in the area.
At the time of the ambush, coalition forces were searching for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Immediately after the enemy ambush, the 3-505 PIR counterattacked. During the siege, paratroopers killed one enemy and captured several pieces of equipment. Weapons and night vision equipment were among those pieces seized during the search of the surrounding area.
Over the course of several days, six of many suspected combatants were tracked down and captured.
During one search of the premises, ammunition and weapons were discovered. Among the equipment were blasting caps, explosives as well as maps marked with known locations of attacks and IEDs.
The evidence was decisive proof that enemy personnel had used the house as a meeting location to plan and coordinate attacks against Coalition Forces.

No criticism meant, but how did destroying the house help? Nothing in the article suggest that terrorists were holed up there so we just blew up a building. Could this be a copy of the Israel practice of destroying the homes of terrorists to discourage others?

I think it kind of sends a message about not being able to hide in the general population. The evacuation was just a courtesy that isn't always necessary, or something like that. Kind of like you describe, yes.

Just a guess, but since we could have simply used normal explosives to destroy the house, the use of a precise bomb was to send a message to anyone watching.
We do not have to come in and knock on your door to destroy a building, we can, if we want, drop death anywhere we want any time we want. Keep it up, and next time there will not be a warning. But I don't know anymore then anyone else here so maybe they just wanted to test a modification on one of the J-Dam.

J-DAM J-SHAM /Were dealing with a part of the world where people take pride in blowing themselves to pieces. Watch um on video run through the streets laughing and smiling when the rounds are flying over their heads..... The more bombs we throw at these religious freaks the more bold they get.
I wouldn't trade that entire POS country for one dead American.....

"Coalition Forces asked the residents of the rural area to temporarily vacate their homes so that the target could be safely destroyed."
PC response.
First by informing the residents (plenty of whom are undoubtably sympathetic to the terrorists) ahead of time, the bad guys were given ample opportunity to split with their goodies. End result? Waste of munitions though this gives the APPEARENCE of our guys "doing something."
2nd this demonstrates nothing but weakness on our part. These people understand only violent decisive force. Playing nice and blowing up abandoned buildings is anything but.
Finally if anyone needed any more evidence of weakness on Bush's part, this is it. His commanders HAVE to institute these types of bloodless tactics as the last thing the war effort needs is the deaths of inocent civilans, collatoral damage, in the midst of an ongoing guerilla war. As was mentioned on an earlier thread, this is the Ehud Barak style of fighting. Will achieve an analogous level of success.
