Captured Enemy Ordnance
The First Marine Expeditionary Force is consolidating captured enemy munitions and unexploded ordnance in 14 Ammunition Storage Points (ASP) throughout the Marines area of operation in Southern Iraq. Marines have secured the sites, and they are turning security over to local Iraqi personnel.
On average, an ASP covers about 20 square kilometers.
Currently, I MEF has secured about 1,300,000 pounds net explosive weight of captured enemy munitions and unexploded ordnance.
I MEF has destroyed about 838,663 short tons (1,677,326 pounds) of captured enemy munitions, captured bulk explosives and unexploded ordnance.
Engineers and Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians are collecting and destroying captured enemy munitions and unexploded ordnance with the help of the local Iraqi people.
I MEF continues to educate the Iraqi people and create awareness of the dangers of captured enemy munitions and unexploded ordnance through an aggressive information operations campaign. To date, six different products, from posters to handbills, detailing the dangers of captured enemy munitions and unexploded ordnance, have been produced. Tens of thousands of them have been distributed by hand and dropped from aircraft to ensure a wide circulation. In addition, a coloring book for children has been produced and is being distributed.
Some of the equipment and munitions are being saved to equip the future Iraqi army.
U.S. forces are recording and marking existing minefields, then passing the information to mine action teams, international organizations and nongovernmental organizations for removal.
Marines are discovering new munitions caches of various sizes per day. They are also dealing with a long-standing mine and unexploded ordnance problem.

If you want on or off my Pro-Coalition ping list, please Freepmail me. Warning: it is a high volume ping list on good days. (Most days are good days).
838,663 times 2,000 pounds equals 1,677,326,000 pounds, not 1,677,326 pounds.
Our people are therefore doing a thousand times better than the bean counters miscount gives them credit for.*
*Unless a short ton is two pounds instead of two thousand pounds.
