WASHINGTON-Here inside the Beltway bubble, we don't really know what's happening in real America. (To that end, the satellite radio monopoly has given a radio show to Salena Zito, chronicler of the salt of the earth for those people for whom Hillbilly Elegy is too heavy a lift.) Unlike many of the cynics and elitists hereabouts, I maintain an optimistic view of my fellow Americans out in the boonies. I think they're all going to get together next October and announce that it's all been an elaborate prank.
I hope that's the case because, otherwise yikes. From The Buffalo News:
"I'd vote for him again 20 more times if I could," said Hal McWilliams, 59, a self-employed contractor from Portageville. "Build the wall! ...Democrats do everything in their power to destroy this country. Hillary Clinton was everything I am against. She was out to destroy the culture that made this country: Hard work, guns, freedom."
"He's about action," said Clark, who didn't vote for Trump but said he would do so if he could vote again now. "I believe he's doing pretty much everything he promised to do." That's what Keith and Bobbi Muhlenbeck think, too. "We love him," said Keith Muhlenbeck, 46. "We support him in everything he's doing. He's a businessman who knows how to get things done, and you can tell he has America's best interests at heart." Washington pundits might be criticizing Trump for his recent reversals on a number of policy issues, including trade with China and the future of the Export-Import Bank. But Bobbi Muhlenbeck sees the president as a tough talker who stands his ground. "I like that he doesn't back down," said Muhlenbeck's wife, 49....

What’s with bearded old guys and Hawaiian shirts?
Yeah, we ‘uns is just a bunch of back woods low life hillbillies from dem dar boonies. Ain’t gotten us much of dat book learnin’ or common sense so we’s marked our X fur dat wild haired guy. Can’t have a wymens up in Washington, don’cha know.
Looks like a Walmart shirt...
Democrats Figured they had the election in the bag but it was a Douche bag
What ‘they’ failed to realize/understand/acknowledge was that Trump was having rallies with 10s of thousands in many of those smaller cities ‘out in the boonies’.
Hillary was having trouble drawing more than a few thousand, even to captive events. In the last few weeks, she would make maybe one or two campaign stops per week. Michelle and Barack Obama, Fauxhauntas, Kaine, Chelsea and others were doing more campaigning than the Democrat prime candidate was. That is Hillary’s fault.
The new book, Shattered, tells how even her advisers knew how unlikable she is.
Geeze, I’m thinking Col. Jessup re: Donald Trump
“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall.”
These yahoos still don’t get it.
Except COL Jessup was spawned in the brain of Rob Reiner and Trump is real.
Liberals are so cute when they try to be clever like grown ups.
So, this fruitcake thinks that Hillary represents “truth”?
Those Obamabots really were very far off the deep end of reality. Good to see they never made it back to any sort of sanity at all.
It was Trump or Hillary. We didn’t get BillHillary. There’s no way that would have been “better”.
[Whats with bearded old guys and Hawaiian shirts?]
They luvs them some Obama. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm-mmmm-mmmm.
Nice catch; brought back memories of Neil Abercrombie. Another idiot Democrat Obama-lover. But that’s redundant.
Wow, talk about self delusion...
If the Libs maintain this attitude, Trump’s reelection will be a cakewalk.
I know, they’ll cheat even to compensate for their own delusions.
Written in 2003:
” If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be 62 years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age....”
- Charles Pierce
And, no, Charlie, you can never live that down.
Portageville is a town with about five ways in, and six ways out of which one is the cemetery. And it reflects what you will see all over New York State, except for the four counties on Manhattan and on Long Island next to it, with about seven million Democrat votes that topple the conservative-leaning remainder of the state. But in the country, if you want real conservative, settle there. Take your checkbook with you. And your handguns.
Love it!
Portageville is a place I am very familiar with....
The funny thing is they act like it’s someplace out in the sticks....it;s actually on the edge fo Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the east and a very popular destination.
Try places like Portville, East Randolph, Great Valley, Frankinville, or Bolivar, Lowville, Boonville or Tupper Lake. They are devastated towns full of whites who supported Trump because there are NO jobs except working in the local mini-mart for minimum wage. They live in trailers or dilapidated houses that are uber-expensive to heat, and they can’t afford to repair because of the effect on their property taxes will render them unable to pay.
Yes, while Manhattan bustles, the rest of New York looks like Detroit writ large.
A drive through any town in the southern tier is infuriating. Battered remnants of former prosperity all around. Once thriving communities gutted by those on the opposite side of the Hudson.
So typical, these a*holes all look the same.
I had to google “Col. Jessup” because I had never heard or that paraquote. I’m OK with that as I never had any desire to see that film.
It was a good movie. You should see it.
I would rather re-watch the old war hero movies.
