I think this is more to signify to Democrats he’s the power in that party and not the Clintons.
Whatever his motive it’s kind of an interesting question. I don’t know who would’ve won. I will say this, so strong is his narcissism that he will toy with the Idea of running again as there is some debate whether someone could sit out a cycle and go for third term. VERY unlikely yes, but with his ego he will at least think about it.
